I should mention at the start, that I'm using an old version of Windows as a storage computer, running Windows XP, Service Pack 2, and I had a problem and am seeking answers. Here's what happened.
I was moving some folders around in My Pictures, and when the "Move" window opened, I noticed that the destination was not what I wanted, so I clicked cancel. Suddenly, half of My Pictures folders vanished! I back up regularly, but I was a little bit overdue, so my last back up is full of items that needed an action of some type, which I did over the time period between the last back up and now, and really, that's been done for a week or two, but I've been so busy and stressed that I procrastinated on the scheduled back up, which I had planned to do immediately after filing and organization of the files in question. Therefore, not only did I "lose" the new files, but also the reorganized files that I've worked on for the past month (I do monthly back ups, which would normally be fine, if I had done this one on schedule).
I searched in vain for a solution, but found nothing. I tried to roll back to the version that was on the computer before by using System Restore, and rolling back to the last system restore point, which was about 8 hours previous. No luck, which was kind of what I was expecting, but after 3 and a half hours, I was getting desperate.
I tried to search for the files, because there's no reason they should have been deleted, so I thought they were accidentally sent somewhere. I don't know if I was doing the search correctly, but nothing came up. Also, there's no way I can remember all the names of the missing folders, although I can remember some.
I considered recovery software, like Yodot Photo Recovery, Recuva, and iSkysoft Data Recovery, but I was nervous about downloading anything, in case it would overwrite the missing files. Now, I'm basically scared to do almost anything on the computer until I accurately assess the situation, which has led me here. From my perspective, the best solution would be to roll back to the previous version of My Pictures before the files vanished, or, try some type of undo function, but I don't know if anything like that is possible, which is the answer I'm seeking from the community. Is this, or any other solution, possible, or am I chasing a pipe dream? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The prospective loss of the data was bad enough, but the loss of all the organizational work I've done since the last back up, is much more devastating. I'm pretty freaked out, and I hope someone out there can help thru this developing nightmare. Thanks for reading, and thanks for your time and consideration.
