Annoying MS Popups suggesting I upgrade from beta version

A

Avram

Whenever I boot, Windows claims "The problem was caused by Windows Vista,
which is created by Microsoft Corporation. You are running a beta version of
Windows Vista, which is no longer supported by Microsoft Corporation." it
headlines that with "Upgrade to the latest retail version of Windows Vista".

I am running Vista Ultimate Version 6.0 (Build 5840). It is not a beta
version.

It is not only annoying but it might be slowing down my computer.

Has anyone had a similar program?

And were you able to cure it.

Yes, in fact, it is.

5840 was the Pre-RTM build. I believe the final build number was 6000. If
you are running 5840, that's a beta build and the reason you are receiving
the message you describe.

Windows Vista Build 5840 is indeed a pre-release version which
is obsolete. The final version of Windows Vista is build 6000.

It sure is! Build 6000 is Vista RTM.

It should have gone into limited usage and access over a month ago.

Somebody is pirating Windows... That's a pre-release build that was leaked
to the web.

Hi Robert,

Build 5840 was the build given out to attendees at Vista launch events. It
*is* pre-release, but has no timebomb AFAIK. I do believe that it won't get
any updates now though.

As others have pointed out... bzzzzzzttttt! It -is not- RTM code. Maybe not
truly "beta", at least not in MS's eyes, but definitely not the final
release. Ultimately (no pun intended), yeah... it -is- "beta" (AKA
pre-release) code.

> And were you able to cure it.

Sure. Get RTM code.
