Ok this one has got me completely stumped.
I am trying to do an in-place upgrade of a Server 2012 box to Server 2016 each time I try it goes through stage 1 then reboots to a black screen with a mouse cursor and never goes anywhere. If I force reboot the machine reverts back to Server 2012 and the Server 2016 installer informs me there was an issue during the safe os stage.
To rule out hardware problems and to enable me to troubleshoot further I have taken an image of the working physical server converted it into a Hyper-V Virtual Machine and again tried the upgrade which has made no difference - it still goes through stage 1 reboots and gets stuck on a black screen.
Thinking there may be some corrupt system files I have run sfc /scannow which found a couple of errors and fixed them. I've also run check disk which found no problems.
I then tried an in-place upgrade of my virtual machine from Server 2012 to Server 2012 R2 which went through perfectly - no errors or warnings although it did get stuck on "getting ready" for about 30 minutes.
Now having my freshly upgraded to Server 2012 R2 install i've tried the Server 2016 upgrade again - yet again it still does the first stage and reboots to the black screen with cursor and goes no further.
I can only conclude that a piece of software on this machine is preventing the Server 2016 upgrade - however I have not got any idea as to what software that could be and remember - it didnt prevent the 2012 to 2012 R2 upgrade. There is no real unusual software on this box.
I'm hoping someone can point me in the correct direction otherwise i'll be seeking to return my Server 2016 license for a refund as it simply doesn't work properly.
