Problems getting laptop with windows vista to start!!

I am getting a "disk read error occurred" and I don't have a copy of the windows CD to do an automated repair. I need to get all my personal files off the computer. The laptop is an old HP G60-243CL notebook model. Are there recovery CD/DVDs available? I also called HP but they won't support since laptop is over 10 years old. It would be very much appreciated if there is anyway someone can please help me resolve this problem.
