Will using this MS-DOS command to revert to a prevous registry remove a virus
and/or its settings?

(I tried posting this earlier, but all the fields cleared after I hit POST)

It will go back to the Registry and other startup files that existed at the time the
backup was made. If the Registry did not contain any references to the virus at
that time, then those settings would be gone. However, the virus files would remain
on the hard drive, and if it does not use the Registry to activate or to store
anything, it would still be active. Also, the virus could have been dropped there
by another malware. That malware or the virus in question could have other means of
activating itself, as long as the files are still present.

What virus in particular are you referring to, and how did you determine that it is
on the system?

I haven't got a virus, but was only inquiring about the possibility of
getting one. Here's just a bit of history:

I used AVG for about four years and it never detected a virus on my
system...not ONCE! I am very careful about web browsing. My ISP provides
virus scanning on all email through its server. I recently decided to
uninstall AVG to free up system resources. I went from resources being 84%
free to being 90% free upon start up. I like the latter! And since AVG was
never catching any viruses to begin with, I figured it probably isn't
necessary. But now that I've done this, I'm sure Murphy's law will have
something to say about it! I just want to know if there are ways to manually
remove viruses. By the way, I frequently check MSCONFIG to make sure nothing
new is added in the Startup group, and I always (yes, ALWAYS) check to see
what my system resources are upon startup. I've got a 355 Mhz processor, so
the chances of a virus going unnoticed is unlikely, as the smallest of apps
affects my system easily. At least that's what I was told.

Why? Resources aren't good for anything unless they are being used.

Resources aren't good for anything unless they're being used...EXACTLY!
Which is why you want to have as much available as possible. Just open WMP
and watch the drop! You need as many free resources to use for some apps.

And as far as likening safety do driving, I either take the bus or walk, so
how's this for an analogy...Staying out of back alleys has saved my life so
far. Which is why I don't go down any digital back alleys. I don't liken
the AVG program as a seatbelt (although that was a very good analogy) but
rather a bodyguard. If you plan to be walking through the hood, then a
bodyguard might be necessary. But if you plan on sticking close to home, the
chances of needing one is greatly reduced.

So, back to the question...it sounds like if I delete the virus files and
backup the registry to an earlier date, that would take care of most
everything?

Sure, were that the only things that might happen.
What happens though when you are completely infected, e.g. the virus runs
through every exe and com file on your disk. Or hides itself in some hidden
file or area, which activates again AFTER you think you've cleared it all.
Or how about some old file you downloaded installed didn't like
uninstalled forgot about noticed some issue thereafter didn't equate it
with the uninstalled file and found some issue or had to re-install. You
then later run through an old CDROM of saved files, re-install it and you're
infected again.

Or how about an email attachment from someone who also doesn't run
Anti-V,,, sure you want to trust that?

All good advice. I truely appreciate it all! I have been without an AV
software for about three months now, and I'm still sitting at system
resources 90% free at system startup. But I have only myself to blame if I
should get a virus infection. I realize that. I'm also ALL TOO familiar
with reformatting my HD, which is a bit of an OCD thing for me! I'm a
perfectionist and I like numbers and looks. It's hard to explain. Anyway,
thanks again for all the replies. I truely appreciate all the advice! I
hope to contribute here as much as you people have with me! Thanks again!

P.S. Just a heads up...I'm going to be back here to ask how to resize the
webview pane in "CONTROLP.HTT", "MYCOMP.HTT", and "RECYCLE.HTT" files. It's
easy enough with "FOLDER.HTT", but that only affects the folders. My
Computer, Recycle Bin, and Control Panel are all controlled by the files
mentioned above. (I want to reduce the width of the webview, by the way, to
about 250-300 px or 20%).

I guess I kinda asked already, didn't I? But this thread is getting long,
so I can start a new question. Later.

Just open these files in an ASCII editor or WP.
The code for relative width and absolute height
looks common-sensical.

Well, I agree with glee, Bear & MEB. Give avast! a try...
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html Avast (free)
I really like it, despite a few peccadillos.

You should also have a full system backup. Here is what I use. You
needen't install it to use for just backup purposes...
http://www.bootitng.com/ 's BootIt NG, has a variety of backup
capabilities & works with all OS: Copy partition(s) to HDD, or Image to
HDD or to CD or DVD. Create, move, shrink or expand partitions without
data loss. Multi-boot too. To install & use beyond 30 days, $34.95.

For virus-checking entirely on your own, get to know...

"START button , Run, SFC"

However, this tool needs a priming, which basically means to accept all
current changes. The "Settings", especially "Search Criteria", may need
adjusting. You may look through the log, C:\Windows\SFCLOG.TXT, to see
what it's done. Also, there is a certain amount of confusion involved
with it, under the best of circumstances. For one thing, certain files
will always seem to have changed. For another, it does not well handle
version numbers greater than 11 characters.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=185836 System File Checker
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188186 SFC baseline
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192832 SFC extracts wrong file

Correct 'Restore from' Location and Try Again
http://www.rickrogers.org/sfc.htm SFC use & problems
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html SFC use & problems

But, REALLY, very likely it too difficult & too late to spot one with
SFC-- except to go running to your full system backup!

I've started a year-long "cure" for what ails me... part of it, anyway.
Honestly, my brain isn't working real well and these groups are moribund, so
I've decided to take a sabbatical, dropping in to lurk every once in a
while.
