My Dell Dimension 3000 has an Intel Pro/100 VE network adapter and employs XP.
(I have no embarrassment about that, I started my computer experience long, long ago with
paper tape and punched card input)
With internet speed tests, the download is 20-30 Mbps, upload 2 Mbps with no other PC activity.
A more recent PC running Linux records a download speed of 60 Mbps.
Assuming the 100 in PRO/100 VE implies a transfer rate of 100Mbps, the internet adapter
has five times the bandwidth displayed by the download test whilst the gross
asymmetry of the download/upload speeds indicates something is amiss.
Perhaps a driver problem?
I downloaded the most recent driver from the DELL site (last updated 2011
but I have never tried updating any driver on this PC)
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, v.8.4.0.0_98754, A01
Version 8.4.0.0_98754, A01
Last Updated 03 Nov 2011
Running PROset.exe evoked the requirement that the existing driver needed to be uninstalled first.
`uninstall' via the Device Manager failed to uninstall the driver
Using the Control Panel | Install/Uninstall Programs (as suggested by PROset) also failed
So, how does one uninstall the existing driver?
