Installing New Desktop Wallpaper on Win98SE

I am trying to install a new 98SE wallpaper from the folder C:\Windows
\Resources, to where I extracted 2 folders with a new wallpaper in
each. The instructions were to click on the registry icon in the
folder to install the registry entry into the registry which was
successful. However, when I go to Display, then click on the far left
tab, these new wallpapers are not there in the list. How can I locate
these wallpapers then try them on my desktop? I am not that tech
savvy, so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

Go to the picture you want as wallpaper and open it up. Then right
click on it and choose "set as wallpaper" or it may say "save as
background". I am assuming that you have not installed a 3rd party
picture viewer here and that the pictures will open in IE. The
picture should then appear in the wallpaper list, but it may be called
IE wallpaper or something like that.

Thanks lb. I got what I was after, just by luck. I right click on the
desktop, click properties, then click the appearance tab, where the
skins I installed to the registry were there. I was then able to
select, the scheme of my choice. I am in the process of converting the
look of my Win98SE operating system to Win XP, so I get the look, some
of the features of XP while completely retaining the Win98SE operating
system. It's like rejuvenating my computer.

I wondered, by the sounds of what you posted, if you had installed an
unofficial service pack, because the Windows folder does not contain a
"resources" folder by default. The wallpaper which shows up in the list you
were referring to is normally located in C:\WINDOWS\WEB\WALLPAPER. If I'm
not mistaken, you simply need only copy wallpaper images to that folder for
them to show up in the list you were inquiring about. However, not all file
types register. Just play with it and find out which ones work.

The Wallpapers-list in the 'Display' Control-panel applet ( i.e.
selecting properties after right-clicking on the Desktop ) shows
pictures ( in the Windows Bitmap-format (*.bmp) only ) located in
%WinDir% ( e.g. C:\Windows\ ) not in a Resources\ sub-folder.

Ay yes, how right you are, et al. All the images are there in the Windows
folder.

Please be careful about 3rd party wallpaper because it always has the chance
of introducing spyware, adware and or other baddies to your computer.

Thanks Paradox, Dan. The folder c:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper is what I was
looking for. By copying some XP wallpapers into that folder, they show
up in the background tab of Display properties. The c:\Windows
\Resources folder is where I extract new Themes to, which shop up in
the Appearance Tab of Display Propertes. All of this is to expain that
I have been installing some excellent third party software in an
attempt to completely update Win98SE which I enjoy want to continue
using. The entire process I have been employing is too much to explain
at this juncture but the results, for a non techie, non computer
generation type like me has been the complete re-juvenation of 98SE
including the transformation of the graphical look to Win XP. I'm
enjoying computing all over again. Briefly, the process involves the
installation of AutoPatcher for Win98SE (a 250mb file), which takes
almost 11/2 hours with 15-20 computer reboots + Revolutions Pack 7,
which converts the physical look to Win XP, including a marvelous new
bootup screen. These programs take control of your computer, you sit +
watch, sort of freaky not bein in control. I am not that uneasy about
trying new things because I have a Norton Ghost ISO image of my "C"
drive. The information on these programs are at
http://www.msfn.org/board/Unofficial_Win98_SE_Service_Pack_f91.html.
>From this page you can navigate to forums on these 2 programs.

AutoPatcher for Win98SE contains a variety of updates + hotfixes
created after Microsoft stopped officially supporting 98SE in July
2006. This program contains updates until August 2007. Another 31mb
update file up to September 2007 is then installed, both are available
from this forum. Revolution Pack 7 is far more experimental but both
installed on my computer without any problems. I suggest checking them
out. I have been consumed with this process for more than a week, but
the results, for me at least, have been exceptional. In my view, these
folks provide the way for continuing to use Win98SE as a contemporary
operating system. Remember I am a non techie, this is just my opinion.

Ridiculous. It would have to be a malware jpg or wmf file
*opened* in a *MS* application. One chance in ten million if
that.

I would worry about your system not wallpapers if I was you...

etc., ad infinitum.

Why don't you just get a wallpaper changer utility like a normal
person? The best one is free. Since you seem to have a lot of
free time, I'll let you look for it yourself.

Well, I have to admit, what's important *is* important.

<insanity snipped>

I don't think your computer will be ANY good until you have
transparent floating windows and until it asks "You just clicked
OK. Are you sure you wanted to do that? Please click OK for YES
and "No, I'm not sure" to see the next confirmation window".

Why don't you just install Disasta and get it over with?

Nothing like a refreshing exchange of crucial information
between two people who are not even on the Usenet.

A post from _pixturesk_ suggests you are partly right as well ...
so checking ... for Bliss sake, under WinXP the wallpaper-list at
Display:Desktop:Background: is the sum of *.bmp's found in
%WinDir% and the location pointed to from the following
Registry-value.
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]
"WallPaperDir"="%WinDir%\\Web\\Wallpaper"
The default value being the path you suggested.

A *.bmp file put in the %WinDir%\Web\Wallpaper\ does not show up
for me under Win98SE but i have 'Active Desktop' disabled ( and
disabled to the point where i can't readily turn it on and check
at the moment ). But perhaps enabling that will list *.bmp's from
the above %WallPaperDir% variable in Win98xE as well.

For the gullible, *FileSubmit* pictures to be used as Wallpapers,
and wrap them in installers! Why? .. to force-co-install malware
obviously.

For example *WhenU* download Wallpapers, don't do it from here:
((protocol)://(Bundled_Malware).appleblossomart.net/misc.php?topic=e&cat=Wallpaper)
Replace the two obvious changes if you want to check it out.

Well, that's not DL'g wallpapers, it's being retarded.

People have to realize the days when they can wake up and say
"computer, make coffee now, and DL the last Batman movie so I
can watch it ten minutes from now" are not here yet, although MS
is working hard on making everyone lazy morons - or maybe just
pandering to them.

With reference to the Revolution Pack 7 that I was mentioning above,
there is currently no provision for uninstalling the program, so
installing it is not wise at this point.

Actually, pixturesk, you can unistall Revolutions Pack. I've used RP7
recently and have also uninstalled it. Then I installed it again and
uninstalled it just to test that it works fine. It has some minor issues,
but basically unistallation of RP7 is pretty good.

FOR RP7 ONLY: Go to Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel. From there,
choose add/remove programs. Then select Show Windows Components at the top
of the window. Then choose the first tab on the left and look for
Revolutions Pack Seven. Select install/uninstall and you're done. A reboot
is required.
