updating xp to sp3

Every time I try to update my computer to sp3 it crashes. Flashes a blue screen then tries to reboot. I can boot into safe mood and safe mood with networking, but will not boot normualy . i have a compaq presario sr1520nx.running xp sp2 home edition version 2002 an amd sempren 3100 1.81ghs. i have plenty of hd space , do not have toolkit or remote assestance loaded. blue screen flashes so fast i can't read it . i need help!
