No Sound

I recently purchased a hp Slim Desktop...it has had a few technical problems, the latest being I have no sound without plugging in headphones (I am positive I had sound before my technical issues). Tried troubleshoot to no avail. Whe I look in sounds it tells me there is no device; plug one in? what about the inbuilt speakers...do they exist?
