The HP Photosmart C4180 All-In-One with printer, scanner, and copier will
work with Windows 98 Second Edition but it is not officially supported.

The Brother MFC7820N Printer/Scanner/Fax/Copier/PC Fax has parallel,
USB, and Network ports and has drivers for Windows 98 original and up.
I just bought one and have it directly connected to the home network.

Two shortcomings:
1. It does not have "smart ring answer" for incoming faxes, which I
used with my old Panasonic thermal fax.
2. It does not have drivers for Windows Server verrsions. I have a
machine running the just-release Windows Home Server and I can't use
the printer with that PC.

Other than that I am a happy camper and the photocopier, thermal fax,
flatbed scanner and old laser printer have all vacated my desk.

yes HP removed all their drivers for windows98 this summer
with some vague referens to that their license with some
third party (ms?) was terminated

So it would be nice if anyone that have drivers for their HP Printer
(and other HP things) could post them on a webpage somewhere
with perhaps a pointer here, so people can find them if they
need to reinstall their windows98.


DOS is whole other problem. DOS itself don't need a driver
to print with a parallel port printer. just print.
Some programs run in dos might need them though to print
graphics and fonts etc and HP still have drivers on their page
for DOS-programs (and for Win3.11)

I understand HP has removed parallel ports from their printers
too.

Lots of Win 98 users still use DOS programs under 98 that don't
work easily with USB printers.

The problem is that many of the newer printers are GDi only and DOS
applications cannot print to them. If the printer doesn't do PCL
emulation chances are DOS applications can't use it, verify with the
printer manufacturer. Many, if not almost all, multi-function printers
sold today are GDI only.

In days of old printers had "brains". The print processing was done by
the printer, the DOS applications only needed to send minimal
instructions to the printer and the printer did all the work of
preparing and assembling the printed documents. These printers were
more expensive than their newer counterparts. In a bid to save money
printer manufacturers have gradually striped all the "brains" out of
their printers in favour of software driven printers, now all the work
is done by software instead of the actual printer hardware, that has
reduced the cost of printers but these printers are "Windows" only
printers and DOS applications cannot use them, or at least cannot use
them without third party solutions. If you want the printer to be DOS
compatible you usually have to pay more for PCL emulation capability.

It's hard to know exactly how much money the manufacturers are actually
saving by having stripped all the "brains" out of the printers but it
probably amounts to a massive amount of about 42¢, although some think
it's probably more like 12 cents per unit...

There are software solutions for printing to these new printers,
basically a peice of software captures an LPT port and it then
translates the output from the DOS application and sends it to the printer.

Why buy a new one, when there are so many going second hand or
surplus? These generally had no option but to be compatible with W98,
though HP migrated their support emphasis to NT / W2K fairly early on.

My local 'Thrift Store' even offers a seven day return policy if there
are problems. I've not had to resort to that, because there's
generally nothing wrong with the devices I've sourced there that can't
be fixed fairly easily.

Second hand uniits are also good sources for spare parts, though you
might have to be patient, waiting for the right part to show up, once
you figure out which part donors contain it.

Using W98 isn't necessarily the easiest or smartest option.

Using Windows 98 Second Edition may not be easy but it certainly is a smart
option because if you see secunia.com then you will notice Windows 98 Second
Edition is safer in terms of vulnerabilites than either Windows 2000
Professional, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home. Windows Vista is
so far more secure but still is annoying due to user account control,
automated features and it still struggles with backwards compatibility of
older programs. We will see how well Windows Vista Service Pack 1 fixes
these issues or if Microsoft does not address them but I think Microsoft will
eventually.

Correction. It does have "smart ring" answer capability and it works
very well. It it just not mentioned in the setup guide or
advertising but the user manual has fuill instructions.

Correction. Brother does have a Windows Server driver for this
machine, for printing functions only. I had to email them and they
sent me the download link. Works just fine and is fully adequate
for my needs for printing from the server.


I am now a totally happy camper and as far as I am concerned this is
pretty close to the ideal laser multifunction machine for small
office/ home office use.
