NISH

Recently i downloaded DreamScene from windows update, installed it n was so
happy to see such kinda things from MS. But when i restarted my machine n
desktop loaded, ALAS !!! I could not work with my desktop. Nothing was
opening n dream video was paused. I had to wait for 2 long minutes for Dream
to load n only after that i could work with mt system. Why is this happening
!!!??? Even though CPU is at 1% usage n hell lots of free RAM Dream does not
load...

Without you giving your system specs it is impossible to say why your
computer runs slow with Dream Scene.

Runs fine here, but works best if I assign affinity to one of the two cores.

I have an older, single core processor AMD Athlon XP 3200 Barton core).
Using Dream Scene is like watching an iceberg melt. When Microsoft
recommends a dual core processor for Vista, people really should take them
at their word.

I will be upgrading my system (again) soon. <grin>

In this case, it's more about your graphics card / drivers.

There have been lots of "video desktop" ideas (even OS/2 had one built
in). But they were *really* slow.

DreamScene gets your graphics card to do all the work needed to display
the video, so you shouldn't experience a performance hit from it.
Unfortunately, it also needs a really modern graphics card to work in
this 'ideal' manner (and graphics card drivers will use CPU too - if
they're buggy they could use lots of CPU).

Driver, maybe, but even with the driver, I get a 5.9 and 5.4 on my graphics
card WEI. My cpu is usually between 0-1 and occasionally 2% on dwm with
Dreamscene paused and 3-7% with it running.

Richard,

I'm using an Intel Celeron 2.8Ghz processor with 1.5GB of system RAM. The
graphics card is ATI Radeon 9550 with 256MB RAM and Dreamscene runs fine
with me. The maybe an odd 'hiccup' occasionally but the running stream keeps
running. My only 'beef' about dreamscene is that there are no scenes that
give the WOW factor. Mind you, in my opinion, even Vista itself doesn't give
me the WOW factor!

I don't entirely get the point of Dream Scene honestly. I mean, it's a
video desktop wallpaper right? What good is that? I generally see my
desktop wallpaper twice a day.

Once when I log in.
Once when I log out.

The rest of that time I'm actually doing something with my computer that
doesn't involve staring at my desktop wallpaper.

Note that I actually *do* have music videos running in the background quite
frequently, but they are usually running full screen on my TV in the same
room attached to my second DVI out where it makes sense to do such a thing.

I must admit I couldn't see the point either. Like you I have music or
something running some of the time but when I want max resources it's
the main screen(s) I look at not the bloody wallpaper :)

DreamScene is simply just another 'gimmick' and, Yes, I agree, if you are
working on your PC all day, the only time you see the desktop is at logon or
log off. However, not everyone uses their PC for business, many use it
simply for pleasure so would, maybe, enjoy, what dreamscene has to offer.
While dreamscene is not a pre-requisite in a business environment one could
also argue that other aspects of Vista (or XP) are not needed either. Media
Center for example, Media Player, Games, Movie maker, DVD Maker.
Unfortunately, one man's meat is another man's poison. To be honest I never
use Media Center, Games simply waste valuable time, Movie Maker and DVD
Maker are next to useless and I rarely listen to music while working because
it is a distraction.
But each to their own if these things entertain you then use them, if not
then don't bother!
