Work-around for Failure for Upgrade of Windows 10 Professional 1809 (17763.529) to 1903 (18362.145)

Twice consecutively, my computer failed to upgrade Windows 10 Professional 1809 (17763.529) to 1903 (18362.145), logging the below error ("Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200D: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903.") and warning messages which I located using the "Event Viewer."

I used a simple work-around for the problem, which I chose to share, in case anyone else might find information about the work-around useful. Be forewarned, however, that my old computer took a very long time (about 8.25 hours) to complete the aforementioned upgrade. Details follow.

To work around the problem, I changed my computer's virtual memory settings, so that Windows 10 Professional temporarily no longer used the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" setting and instead used the following virtual memory paging file settings on the computer's only drive ("C:"):

  • Initial size (MB): 65536
  • Maximum size (MB): 131072

The computer then successfully upgraded Windows 10 Professional from the aforementioned original to modified versions, which the following information explains. I then reconfigured Windows 10 Professional to again use the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" setting.

BEGIN ORIGINAL, MODIFIED WINDOWS 10 PROFESSIONAL VERSION INFORMATION

original, per "ver" command: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17763.529]
modified, per "ver" command: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18362.145]

Per "Settings" -> "System" -> "About"'s "Windows specifications":
original:

* Edition . . : Windows 10 Pro
* Version . . : 1809
* Installed on: 3/30/2019
* OS build . .: 17763.529

modified:

* Edition . . : Windows 10 Pro
* Version . . : 1903
* Installed on: 6/9/2019
* OS build . .: 18362.145

END ORIGINAL, MODIFIED WINDOWS 10 PROFESSIONAL VERSION INFORMATION

Note that my computer is very old and only has 4 GB of RAM. Following are more details about it.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
  • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @2.00GHz
  • 4 GB of DDR2 RAM with 800 MHz maximum speed

The computer typically runs Windows 10 Professional and related software acceptably (not super) fast. It took a very long time to complete the aforementioned upgrade, though. Details follow.

The computer took, CDT, from 4:56 PM on June 8, 2019 to 12:28 AM on June 9, 2019 to complete the following four (pre-restart) stages of the upgrade:

  1. Downloading
  2. Getting Things Ready
  3. Pending install
  4. Installing

The computer took, CDT on June 9, 2019, from 12:29 AM to 1:14 AM to restart and finish the upgrade. I instructed Windows to perform the first restart. I believe it automatically restarted two additional times during the final stage of the upgrade.
