Why is Vista telling me it can't locate my virus or spyware? I have both but
windows does not see it.

If you have both a virus and spyware, what programs have you used to try and
remove them?

I've only done a reinstall. What do you suggest?

Frank,
I think I know what happened I just don't know how to fix. I had a startup
freeze with no mouse or keyboard so I did a power shutdown. When I tried to
uninstall the Virus and spyware software got an error message talking about a
"windows security center unable to register because of catastrophic failure
or corruption.
Do not know how to fix. If you have any ideas. I'm all ears

You are very hard to understand. Is Vista perhaps telling you that you
don't have an anti-spyware or anti-virus installed? Vista comes with an
anti-spyware program (Windows Defender) installed and turned on. Of you are
actually getting a message that you have a virus or spyware, then that
message is not coming from Vista, it's coming from some malware.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Frank,
Windows security center pops up after boot up telling me to check my
spyware. When I open security center I see a line that says that vista
cannot locate any Spyware on my machine and windows defender is turned OFF.
When I click on "Turn On Windows defender" the software goes out to look for
an update. It's unable to find any updates but does not turn on Windows
Defender, and so the problem persists. This problem began when I had a
boot-up freeze which left me without a mouse or keyboard to navigate with so
I had to do a power button shut down. When I try to uninstall my virus or
spyware software I get a message telling me that the software failed to
unregister. Does this explanation help with your understanding of my problem?

I think you are purposely trying to confuse me. There is a huge difference
between spyware and anti-spyware or between a virus and an anti-virus.
Please do not use the terms inter-changeably.

Do a thorough check for spyware and viruses, following all of the steps at
one of these Web pages.
