1: simple method: use FDISK to delete all partitions
on the hard drive(s).
2: complex method: buy third-party software that will
overwrite NULL bytes to every place on the hard drive.

formatting the drive will erase it..
(but in theory, data could still be recovered)
so you may want to reinstall windows...
that will make any data on the drive pretty much gone

... et al.

Why buy? There are several free ones. For example:
Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN)
<http://dban.sourceforge.net/>

I was also going to suggest formatting. How about taking a very powerful
magnet to the hard drive? Although that may dammage the workings of it.

This utility writes zero bytes to every sector on a Fujitsu HD:
http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/COMP/fcpa/hdd/utilities/fjerase.zip

I suspect it works for other HDs, but I haven't tried it.

Here is a Seagate Zero Fill utility:

Western Digital also has a "WRITE ZEROS TO DRIVE" option in its Data
Lifeguard Diagnostic:

Will wipe the low-level formatting done by the factory for ide drives.
Result will be unusable hard drive. Not fixable.

Has anyone heard of Restore? It's freeware. You can recover permanently
deleted files, but it also has a function which wipes all sectors clean
making any info next to impossible to recover.

You mean Restoration...?...

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html Restoration
http://aumha.org/downloads/restoration.exe Also Restoration

I use that occasionally to recover deleted files & folders-- but I can't
swear to how well it's "Delete Completely" will work... except...
actually... I THINK it will only completely delete files that already
are deleted! It won't affect any others-- I hope!

Yeah, Restoration...that's what I meant! I like it. I use it every once in
a while to permanently delete all deleted files, so they cannot be recovered.
Then, when I look for deleted files, it finds nothing. It does not affect
existing files! But I've wondered if there's a software out there that can
even restore the files that Restoration deletes? Because in the readme file
or in the help files somewhere, I remember reading that Restoration has the
ability to delete all deleted files so that there is very little chance of
them being recovered.

I thought that was it. It's a good one. Another way to permanently
delete the deleted files is to do a Defrag. My guess is the files will
be really tough to reconstruct after that-- but Homeland Security might
be able to do it! So, be careful!
