Problem with Office 2000 producy key, after applying SP1

Hello. Looking for a little help...

We have a customer with a Terminal Server running Windows Server 2003 in
application sharing mode. This weekend, we applied SP1 for Windows Server
2003.

The installation of SP1 went fine. But there is now a problem afterwards.

The server is also running Microsoft Office 2000 Professional. Since
applying SP1, the Welcome to Microsoft Office 20000 customer information
window is displayed whenever trying to open any of the Office 2000 apps
(Word, Excel, Outlook, etc). It asks for username, initials, organization,
and CD key. This happens for all user profiles.

Unfortunately the original Office 2000 CDs and key codes seem to be missing.

I am trying to find a way to recover from this situation. As I have 30+
users who will be coming into the office on Monday morning, and all will be
prompted to enter this information.

Prior to applying SP1, I did confirm a good tape backup of the server. And
also prior to applying SP1, I did make a manual backup of the
C:\WINNT\repair folder, which has copies of the registry files. Using
REGEDIT, and loaded a copy of the SOFTWARE hive from the prior copy.

On a hunch, I browsed to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Registration\ProductID
thinking that I might find the information that I was looking for. But that
key is empty.

Everything related to the Office 2000 software was working fine prior to
applying SP1.

Any ideas how I can recover from this situation, assuming that we can't find
the original CDs and installation keys?

Your problem seems to be more or less similar to the one described
here:

297379 - Programs Can Revert to the Default Settings on Terminal
Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297379

Compare your current registry with the backup copy of the shadow
area keys, i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install
to see if that gives a clue. If you're lucky, the information is
there and you could copy it to the shadow area in the current
registry.

Normally, you would solve this by running Office as Administrator
while the server is in install mode and enter the information
required, which would then be written to the shadow area and copied
to the user profiles when they log on. But that requires the CD
key, which you don't have.
So if the saved registry key doesn't help, you could try workaround
nr. 2 or 3 mentioned in the article.
