Windows Server 2016 Issues after Windows Update and Restart

I

Recently I saw a screen on our Windows Server 2016 server saying that updates had been processed and a restart was necessary. This has happened before so I just scheduled the restart for after working hours. The next day there were problems with some of our applications that use the SQL Server database on the server - no one could connect - being told that the database did not exist. Well, it did and was clearly visible on the server - all SQL server services were running, all looked okay. Upon further investigation I found that a program exception for sqlserver.exe had been removed from the inbound rules in Windows firewall. Can anyone explain why Windows update could remove this item? Would there have been a log or some form of notification created? I looked in event viewer but there was nothing.

Also, since the restart, the network icon in the task bar says that there is no internet access - and when I investigate this it says that neither network adapter have any internet access. That is weird because I do have internet access and am accessing this forum now while on the server! I do not want to make changes to the network adapters but how do I safely get rid of this "no internet" message.

This question was originally asked in the user forum answers.microsoft.com and I was advised to move it to this forum. I've tried a search on windows update but got a lot of non-relevant results so I'll post my question. If there is a previous post on this subject please let me know.

Any information and assistance on these issues will be appreciated. Thank you.
