windows 7 upgrade freezes up on starting windows before windows logo appears

Ok so my power supply killed out on my main computer leaving me with no other option than to break out my old tower which is running win xp media center edition ver 2002 serv pack 3. For whatever reason windows 7 upgrade advisor tells me i have no internet connection is is clearly not the case. So I just tried to update anyway but windows 7 upgrade freezes up on starting windows before windows logo appears and thats it. Please someone, I would be grateful for the assistance through this headache
