User specific settings

[Paradoxdb3]

Is there any way that Windows 98 has the capability to show certain
wallpaper, themes, and even files based on the login? For example if I want
my wallpaper to be a picture of T-Rex's and monsters, but my wife wants
flowers and bubbles, can we set it up so that Windows 98 remembers our
specific settings (maybe even startup programs)?

Do we choose the Windows Family login, or would it be the login for the
ethernet card we have installed? Thanks in advance!

You can setup a second user in Control Panel > Users.

question, but when I defrag the hard drive, do I need to log into each user
and defrag?

And also related, how do I prevent Windows from loading by hitting the
Cancel button at the login screen?

No, Defrag will do the entire hard drive chosen, regardless of which user starts it.

I'm not aware of a way to stop Windows from loading by using the Cancel button. If
you hit Cancel, Windows will load the default profile AFAIR. Brian will correct me
if I am mis-remembering.

There's a registry hack that will force a un/pw and if either is wrong or cancel is
selected, windows will/should partially load and then return to the logon screen.
There are two fallbacks involved however:

1) Booting to Safe Mode allows the hack to be removed. Good if you need to remove
it, which you will if you create any new users.

2) Any new user created after the hack will inherit the NoLogon value and reboot to
the logon screen even w/correct un/pw. The way around it is to remove the hack
first, create the new user and then reinsert it from the new users account. Always
create the key after rebooting into a newly created user account, the new account
becomes the Default account.

If you decide to continue on with the proceedure, you do it of your own will and
assume all responsibility if something should go wrong. Please see all under NOTE
(below the hack info) for info on backing up and restoring the registry.

In the newly (last) created account run regedit to open the registry.
Expand to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Right click in the Right Pane, click New > String Value
Name it: NoLogon (exactly as shown)
Give it the value: RUNDLL32 shell32,SHExitWindowsEx 0 (exactly as shown)
Close out of the registry, logoff and when you log back in you should be presented
with the logon screen.

NOTE:
Always backup the registry or any key before making any changes so that you may
import the keys back in should anything go wrong. Haphazardly removing keys in the
registry is very dangerous and can render your system useless. Be 100% sure of what
you are doing and what you remove can be safely done.

bar while in the registry, click on “Export Registry File.”. Choose a location, I
recommend saving it to the desktop and it makes it easy to find. Place a check next
to “Selected Branch” and give the file a memorable name, select save, make your
changes and close out. If you have no problems after say 2 weeks, you can delete the
exported files.
If you have problems, double click the reg file on the desktop to import/merge it
back into the registry.

Thanks, Brian for the info. I think I may try it. But before I do, I have a
few questions so please reply at your earliest convenience.

I'm not 100% certain on the last user created, so either I need to delete
the .pwl files and re-create the users, or does the user option in Control
Panel allow for the removal of users so I can re-create them again? Or
alternatively, can I try the registry hack in what I believe to be the last
user created and if it messes things up, I can remove the registry edits (by
logging in under the other user's profile?) and add them in again under that
profile?

(I created two users, and while creating the second (last) user profile, I
was presented with the message that the user name already existed, but it
still created the user profile for me. So I'm not sure if that would be
deemed as the FIRST profile created or the LAST.)

And lastly, will the desktop wallpaper at the logon screen reflect the
desktop wallpaper of the last (default) user? Because I just want a blue
background for the logon...no wallpaper. Thanks again for your help!

You can try it with the last user created and if something goes amiss boot to Safe
Mode to undo the hack in the reg.

If you wanted you could just create another new one and do the hack once rebooted
back into it.

Shouldn't matter because you can set it to what you want in Display Properties >
Background tab. Any other users created before the hack can set their preferences to
whatever they want.
