Upgrading Windows XP Pro

I have Outlook mail files (pst) dating back to 2005 that I'm trying to access. I purchased an old Dell Latitude D610 Laptop on Craigslist, knowing that it had a 2003 version of Outlook installed. I spent literally days trying to move the pst files into Outlook 2003 (also tried Outlook Express) without success. I think it's because my pst files contain a mixture of both ANSI and Unicode files. The only Outlook files that transferred successfully were the Contacts and Calendar.

Regardless, I figured my best bet is to scrap the Outlook idea and upload the pst file into my Gmail account using GSSMO, Google's Outlook migration tool. That tool, however, only works with Windows Vista or newer, and my D610 has Windows XP Pro.

Question, unless you see a flaw in what I'm trying to accomplish, can you identify what I need to upgrade XP Pro to Vista, and tell me where I can get it? I don't, by the way, care about any data or profiles currently on the laptop. They all belong to the prior owner. My primary purpose is to get at my Outlook files.

Thanks so much for any help you can give.
