running programs on network drives

R

Rich Wethington

I recently replaced the server we use for terminal services. I have
installed all of the programs that were on the old server on the new one. My
problem is that any program that is actually on a network drive will not
work. I get the following error.

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item.

The programs work fine when run from the console, but not over terminal
services. This server also has ISA 2000 running on it. The old one did also.

Thanks,
Rich Wethington

Are you starting the application directly or is it within a desktop?

Try reinstalling the application after TS is installed.

I am unsure what you mean. I can not add/remove a program from the control
panel if the executable is on a network drive. I can not double click an
execuutable on an network drive in wndows explorer. I get the same error
from either.

I tried that. No luck.

The response you responded too was the wrong one. It was supposed to go

Have you tried running regmon/filemon to see if there is an issue with
permissions? Does this happen if the user is an admin?

I am not familiar with regmon/filemon. I have checked permissions and they
seem fine. It does the same thing for an admin or a standard user.

From
http://ts.veranoest.net/ts_faq_user_issues.htm#IEESconfig

Q: When users start a program, they get a "file download" dialog
box, or an error message: "Windows cannot access the specified
device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions
to access the item."

A: Internet Explorer Enhanced Security (IEES) restricts access to
scripts, executable files, and other potentially unsafe files on a
UNC path unless the UNC path is added to the Local Intranet zone
explicitly. For example, if you want to access \\server\share
\setup.exe, you must add \\server to the Local Intranet zone.

On the Terminal Server, go to Control Panel - Internet Options -
Security - Local Intranet zone. Add the UNC name of the server
where the application is located, something like \\server.

Or configure this in a GPO:
User Configuration - Windows Settings - Internet Explorer
Maintenance -
Security zones and Content ratings
"Local intranet"

If needed, set the "Launching applications and unsafe files"
setting for your Local Intranet zone to Enable.

hi,
uninstall Internet explorer enhanced security configuration windows
component, or set the servers where the share reside on trusted sites on
internet explorer, or put the servername and IP on the hosts on the terminal
server.
