PDF viewing slow.

We have Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1 Installed on two terminal servers and the
pages scroll very slow for users when veiwing pdf files.

Does anyone have suggestions\tweaks I can do to Acrobat Reader to make the
pages scroll faster on a terminal server.

What server do you use, Windows 2003? Does it repro on every TS session, how
about the console session? Does it repro with other applications?

Yes I have it installed on Windows server 2003 the server is a DL380 with
quad core processors and 4GB of RAM. I think when you say repro you mean
reproduce the .exe in every session. If that is what you mean the answer is
yes. How can I change that? Any help is appreciated.

Actually I was referring to the problem you observed. Does Acrobat Reader
respond slowly in every TS sessoin? If you login to the physical console and
run Acrobat Reader, is it much faster? Do you also see low performance with
other applications?

At the console it works fine it is only slow in TS session. I temporarily
fixed the problem by install a free "light weight" PDF view program from
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

This works much better then Acrobat Reader 8, but I'm not sure what
incompatibilities this program might have with other apps.

If there is a way to make Adobe 8 work better on TS please let me know.

did you install the adobe 8.1 with the mst from adobe ?
did you tweak adobe to get it out of the hklm....\run etc

No I did not install it with the MST from Adobe. Where can I find that file?
The problem isn't that adobe is causing the machine to run slow. The
problem is that the image moves slow and very choppy when viewing a pdf on
the TS. Everything on the system works fine even when Acrobat Reader is open.

The FoxIT Reader from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php that I
installed has fixed the problem, but I would rather get Acrobat Reader to
work since that is what the users are familiar with.

Let me know about that MST file maybe that will help the images scroll
smooth and fast on the Terminal Server.

I have exactly the same issue.

Acrobat 8, installed on a 2003 TS.

The scrolling of PDF files is very slow - the user scrolls and then it
takes a long time to repaint the page.

I can reproduce the problem by coming in remotely to the console
session (mstsc /console) but I suspect it will be silky smooth if I
look at it in person on the console.

All users are remote from the TS - coming in to the server over a 1mb
symmetrical link.

It looks exactly the same as if you open a hi-res image or go to a
graphics intensive website. It would appear logical to me that
graphics don't work well on a TS since they can't be compressed, so
you have to send all the image information over the wire and it takes
a while to come down.

I have just tested it logged on to a computer on the LAN and then
connecting to the Terminal Server, there is no problem.

The question mark for me is whether Acrobat is displaying the PDF in
too high a resolution, and if there is any way we can turn this down.

I have figured out that Adobe Acrobat 8 does not work very well on Terminal
Services. I downgraded to Adobe Acrobat 7 and PDF viewing is fast and
smooth. My advice is get rid of 8.0 and go to 7.0.
