Can't use Windows Update after ME reinstall

J

Jackson

I used my recovery CD to do a fresh reinstall of windows ME. I went to
windows update and it said I had to upgrade IE as a critical update first. I
did that, but now when I got to windows update, it hangs at 0%. It looks like
a problem with the script engine/jp or something like that - how can I fix
this?

Apparently downloading the msft active script engine 5.6 will help - but I
can't find it anywhere ?

Although now withdrawn by Microsoft you can still download a copy from
http://www.macropool.com/en/download/scripting.html

And yes, I and others have complained to Microsoft about it being
withdrawn for Win9x systems but to no avail. Microsoft simply aren't
interested in Win 9x users.

I wanted to do a fresh install and make an ME image and an update, to
DVD or CD, but didn't, but
ME is now outdated, like win95. No big deal.

And you should still be able to do exactly that, that is clean install Win
Me, update from the Windows Update site and image. The problem is that if
you break scripting you will have to look elsewhere for a copy of the
scripting engine to repair the system.
