Windows Key

I purchased an Alienware X51 computer in 2013 and it came with Windows 8. So it crashed and I rebooted it with the factory disc. When I go to put in the Windows product Key it says its blocked. How did I pay for a product and now its blocked? It has only ever been installed on this computer.
