Windows Live Mail Desktop

I was using this in XP, but after upgrading to Vista, it doesn't seem to
work too well (like it crashes).

Does anyone know of a way to get my messages from WLMD to another program
like Windows Mail ?

Going to Windows Mail would be going backwards.
Try upgrading to the new Windows Live Mail, which replaced the WLMDesktop
version.
