Having remote desktop printer problems with Vista

J

I am running remote desktop through a VPN and everything is working fine,
except for printers and "cut and paste". The remote desktop does not see the
USB printer at all. The software to support the printer is installed on the
server (or at least I have been told that it was). Anyone out there know how
to fix and/or diagnose this issue? The exact same setup worked under XP.
However, this is a new box and a new OS, so it is possible that something is
not configured 100% correctly. Any ideas?

This might be stating the obvious (sorry), but ... have you looked under the
"Local Resources" tab of the Reemote Desktop Client, before you connect to
the remote machine?

Printers and Clipboard are both selectable devices which might be turned
off.

Run the command "mstsc" to bring up the Remote Desktop Client (you might
also be able to start rhe RDP Client from the Start menu, I'm not sure).
Click on the Options button
Click on the Local Resources tab
Under "Local Devices and resources" make sure the Printers and Clipboard
checkboxes are checked.
Possibly, you could also click on More and play with teh Plu-n-play options
to see if it helps.
Go back to General, enter the name or address of the target machine and hit
Connect.

If it continues to fail after that ... um, I dunno. What version of Windows
is on the machine you are connecting to? And, do you see any events in the
Event Log of the remote machine (under Administrative Tools). If the remote
machine cannot map a driver to teh queue, it should log an event 1106 or
1111.

Hope it helps, let us know how you get on.

Hi,

When you open the Remote Desktop dialog, before connecting are you going
into options/local resources and enabling printers and the clipboard?

Yes, both clipboard and printer are selected. I was just wondering if someone
had any ideas or if someone out there was using a multifunction USB printer
with remote desktop. This all worked with Windows XP.
