Microsoft to Ship Vista SP1 Beta Next Week?

According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, unnamed sources at Microsoft
told her that the company plans to ship Service Pack 1 (SP1) for
Vista alongside Windows Server 2008, as it had originally planned.
Previously Microsoft had said that making the changes to Instant
Search because of Google's complaint would cause a delay to SP1.
But it now seems Microsoft is accelerating development
of Vista's 1st service pack. ???

This is referring to the Beta.
The release of this build of the Beta has little if any bearing on the
release of the final build.

Perhaps but the apparent availability of this Beta by mid-July has taken
many seasoned Microsoft watchers by surprise judging by the various blogs
around the place.

I have no idea how since this is pretty much the most anticipated release
since the USA release of the latest Harry Potter movie on Wednesday. :)

The "word on the corner" has always been that SP1 will ship at about the
same time as Windows Server 2008 which is, by the way, at Beta3 stage right
now. It's also been widely anticipated that it would ship near the end of
2007. All this has been in the computer press for some time now.

I'd say that any Beta version should have some
meaning as a ground testing application for Microsoft.

John
Those taken by suprise are either unfamiliar with the normal process
or pretending a Beta for a OS Service Pack starts later than this.
By many rumors, we are very close to 6 months from SP-1 release, that
is not a whole lot of time.

The only thing close to a suprise may be that is seems it will be a
public Beta where many Betas are not.
