Installing to a USB Drive

J

Jason Freeman

As you might know, Windows XP was not very receptive to booting from a USB
drive. (I'm actually in the process of trying it myself right now.)

Has anyone tried installing Vista to a USB drive? I'd be curious about the
results.

Won't boot.

Have you tried any of the Windows XP tweaks (e.g., changing some USB INF
files)?

Aside from the fact that it's not supported, none of the XP 'tweaks' work
with the new installer in Vista. I don't believe it's possible at all.

I would not think it would work any better than XP did because they are not
boot disks. Why not install Vista on a second drive or partition or with
the Virtual PC program from Microsoft. This forces Vista to see XP as a
separate PC.

Sure they are. Linux works fine that way. The problem is that MS is brain
damaged, not the disks.

I -think- this is possible if the external drive is SATA plugged into a SATA
port. Unfortunately, Colin Barnhorst, the guy who posted about this, lost
patience with all the trolls in this ng and no longer frequents it. Our
loss. Sigh...

I don't have an answer... sorry. I know external SATA ain't external USB...
just posting the possiblity for booting from an external drive.

What a very silly and unhelpful answer. Linux does not work that way friend.
