WHEN YOU TURNED THE PC ON, YOU GOT A WHOLE PAGE OF RED LINES
at the top it said “applying update operation xxxx of yyyy” where y was some huge number in the tens of thousands and x looked like it was running up to that y number.
it blew by before you could write down the number.
You have never seen this kind of page before; it’s alarming.
FOR GRINS, YOU OPENED THE WINDOWS UPDATE PAGE. IT SAID SOME UPDATES WERE INSTALLED YESTERDAY AND THREE MORE WERE READY FOR DOWNLOAD—TWO IMPORTANT, ONE RECOMMENDED.
the time on the new ones was about an hour before you switched on
YOU SELECTED DOWNLOAD NOW to get the updates
AFTER DOWNLOAD, YOU WERE TOLD TO RESTART. YOU DID.
THEN YOU TRIED LOOKING UP SOMETHING ON THE WEB AND GOT SOME KIND OF ERROR MESSAGE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN—THE UPDATES FAILED
SO YOU SLAMMED SHUT THE INTERNET EXPLORER AND WENT BACK TO THE UPDATE PAGE
UPDATE PAGE LISTED WHAT LOOKED LIKE THE THREE NEW UPDATES THAT WERE READY—ALL SUCCESSFUL.
But at the top of the list was an update that had FAILED.
Clicked on that, copied it and printed it.

You don’t want more info: That’s a rabbit hole. So you typed in the link for Help and Support.
THAT GOT YOU A PAGE THAT SAID YOU NEEDED TO DOWNLOAD THE WINDOWS UPDATE TROUBLESHOOTER. You thought you had that already, but what the heck, so you downloaded it.
Instructions were to open or save. You selected save, and got a screen saying
WHAT THE . . . ?
You don’t know where the heck that folder would be: you don’t use apple (although you did try to hook up a tablet last winter—but that all went to hell so you took the gadget back)
You know you don’t want your trouble-shooter in some obscure place that you can’t find, so you back up a couple frames and select open instead.
THAT got you a page saying windows 7 support ends in january. thanks—knew that, but it’s still October.
The next thing it says is how to update to windows 10: you still do not know what that means for security purposes, so you skip that and read though the list of FAQs
Under FAQs you find “windows update troubleshooter”
It tells you you do not have to enter your error number—you can just go to the troubleshooter and it will analyze the problem and solve it.
Okay, fine – you just wanted to do two quick tasks today, and you have already been fighting this son-of-a-gun for more than an hour. So, you back a couple screens and this time you select “OPEN”
Now you have to give permission for Microsoft to invade your computer—by entering your password.
patience running low, so just do that.
NOW YOU GET A PAGE THAT SAYS THE TROULBESHOOTER IS ANALYZING YOUR PROBLEM, GATHERING DATA, COMPRESSING IT, GATHERING MORE DATA. YADA YADA YADA
that takes another ten minutes.
At the end of that, you get a short page that tells you there are two updates that failed but several that didn’t fail . You cannot copy or print this page, but there is an option to print the “details” on the page, so you do.
(attached)
You get back three pages of stuff about everything the update troubleshooter fixed. NOTHING about the updates that failed.
So you go back as couple screens and find the page that lists the failed updates as well as the ones that have been fixed. You take a snip of that page, so you will have some reference to what they are calling failed updates. (attached)
In a little box labeled problems found, you see that “problems installing recent updates” has been “fixed” three times. But at the top of that list—with red x-marks on them—you also find:
Service registration is missing or corrupt Not fixed
Windows Update error 0x80070057(2019-10-05-T-01_36_30P) Not fixed
Your options are to “explore additional options” or to “close the troubleshooter”
You know the latter means you just get to keep whatever the problems are, and you a dubious about “explore other options” because it usually results in advice to call a friend.
SO now—believing you will have to explain all this to somebody—you go back through the process and everything you have copied or printed to make these notes.
without much hope, you try “explore additional options”:
you cannot copy that page, either, but you take a snip of it (attached)
Where do you go to get real help from Microsoft?
Why do you feel their products are NOT a tool for you to use, but really a way to consume your time and attention?
Where IS Apple? Is it time to switch?
one “additional option” is the forum. what the heck? anybody out there able to help?
no telling how long it will take to get this on the “forum,” but here’s the current time stamp before you start trying:
