I took over tech support for a client that was previously using another company. They had a physical on-premise server with server 2016 installed, and within that Hyper-V was set-up with a virtual machine set-up as the domain controller. This was also running Server 2016 Standard. Fast forward and the VM crashed and they corrupted the data and had no backup. I rebuilt the VM and installed Windows using an ISO file the previous company left on the physical host. Now, the VM says Windows is not activated and gives error code 0x8007232B "We can't activate Windows on this device as we can't connect to your organization's activation server. Make sure you're connected to your organization's network and try again. If you continue having problems with activation, contact your organizations support person."
I suggested they contact the previous company about getting the license info or help activating as they would have likely paid for that initially when they got the server set-up by them, but they do not want to do that. They said buy a new license if we need to. I don't know much about this kind of thing so I'm just wondering if there is any other options here?
