Att. ...et al.â€- RE: Bothersome popup

....et al"., I am not quite sure if this is the best way to update/follow up
on the subject or restoring the registry of choice. At any rate, this is the
current status.
If you recall, I had mentioned that I could not get the system to restore a
registry backup that I had saved the day before the pop up problem showed
up.
Because of the many issues present in my machine and fearful of taking the
steps that you well outlined to get the ‘job’ done by a different route, I
had more or less decided to let things be and just deal with the pop up
nuisance.
Later on, the reality that only five of the latest backup files of the
Registry would show up on the primary list of the dialog box, when issuing
the command ‘scanreg /restore’ at the Dos Prompt, made me attempt at deleting
one or two files, irrelevant to me, and inserting the ‘saved file’ in the
mix. I, then, re-tried to restore that copy and it worked. The ‘bothersome
pop up’ has now gone.
The line ‘shell=explorer.exe longer.exe’ is still present
in the Boot Tab of the System.ini File, but it is unchecked.
Should I assume that only the latest five backups shown on the list can be
restored and not any other that might be available and shown by expanding the
dialog box with the down-arrow key?

That's the way you have to do it, or else *move* rather than delete the backup cab
files you don't require and replace them with the ones you want to use.

Do you have another "shell=" line in the System.ini file that is enabled, and just
states:
shell=explorer.exe
?
If yes, then you can delete the line that is unchecked, the one that says
‘shell=explorer.exe longer.exe’

scanreg /restore must be run from a DOS boot (not from a DOS box within Windows, nor
from Safe Mode), and it will show only the newest five backups available for
restore.
What dialog box? There are no dialog boxes with the DOS utility scanreg in the way
that they exist in Windows. The arrow key will only scroll down the list of
backups....only 5 will be available.

Do you have any items currently disabled (unchecked) in msconfig> startup tab?

What glee writes. Hey, hey, good news! Good to hear you were able to perform
a 'ScanReg /Restore', that you figured out how to make the saved one
available in the selection-list *and* that it indeed helped to take care of
the boot-time pop-up. Good thing you had that registry-backup, since before
the pop-up started occuring, saved away.

Again, what glee writes. Or rather, you yourself already found out how to
make other backups available, by moving the newer ones out of the way. No
way to increase it to more then five for each run-time that i know of.

There is no ‘shell=explorer.exe’ to be seen in system.ini (or win.ini,
autoexec.bat or config.sys). RegSeeker finds 23 references to Explorer.exe
in the Registry. Out of those, several mention 'shell\open\command'.

Sorry, if I misled anyone! I understand that it would have to be done from
DOS. To get there, I usually click on Start/Shutdown/Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
On my machine, the command ‘Scanreg /restore ‘ shows four backups. The down
arrow key will show the fifth one.
It would be great if I could recall exactly what was happening during the
period of time when the attempts at restoring the fifth option with the
desired backup kept failing. I am not sure if, at this point, any attempts to
reproduce the same scenario would be of significance. The knowledge of what
to do, if necersasry, is acceptable to me.

Odd. You can change the line:
shell=explorer.exe longer.exe
to
shell=explorer.exe
and then re-enable the line and reboot.
