screen images and font distorted

When I turned on my computer today, the size of desktop screen was
distorted--everything---icons, font and screensaver pic all look stretched
out width ways. And it is the same with all screens I open--internet
explorer, all websites, e-mail etc. I have to keep scrolling over on the
internet now to see the full screen because it is all stretched out!

I have no idea why this suddenly happened or how to change it back!

I would be very grateful for any input.

Assuming that you didn't (very recently) install any new software (games?)
the it's possibly (probably?) due to "someone" accidently adjusting the
screen resolution size in 'Display Properties \ Settings'.

Either reset (correct) it - if known, or better still, run System Restore
and select 'yesterday's' date. This *should* restore your settings back to
the way it was "yesterday" - before the screen stretched and hopefully
resolve the distorted screen issue

Thanks so much for your suggestions Mart. I didn't install anything new so
I tried adjusting the resolution--I tried every option available but it
doesn't fix the problem. And when I try to run system restore, I can't
remember the exact message but it seemed to say that it did not have in it's
memory what my settings were a few days back. (Perhaps because I never got
around to running or installing CD's that had something to do with restoring
when I first got my computer(?))
It seems right that something must have been accidentally set differently,
but I just can't figure out what it would be!

OK. No System Restore - let's worry about that later (and *maybe* due to
not having done any Windows Updates, perhaps?)

Next try is the following (no guarantees of course!) and assumes the problem
occurred within the last 5 days (or dates shown, see later) and is a
'computer' problem rather than a 'monitor' issue :-

Start | Run and in the "Open:" box, type :-
scanreg /restore (note the space between the g and /)
Then press OK

Follow the screen prompts and select the last 'good' date BEFORE the problem
occurred. (N.B If problem occurred before FIRST date shown then don't
bother) continue with the instructions.

See if that repairs the problem. It might also be worth booting into Safe
Mode and confirming that the screen's geometry is correct for a 640 x 480
pixels (4 wide x3 high aspect ratio) resolution. I suppose that the monitor
might just be at fault here.

If not, you'll probably have to re-install your Video Drivers BUT you will
need the CD supplied with your PC, containing the Video Driver - or access
the Video Card Manufacturer's web site and hope that they are still able to
supply the latest WinMe drivers for your Video Card.
