USB ports don't work on Win98SE

T

My husband has an old Dell 200Mhz machine that originally came with
Win95. Upgraded recently to Win98SE, hoping to get the two factory
1.1 USB ports to work. They still don't. Under Add New Hardware, I
was supposedly successful in adding a "USB Composite Device" and a
"USB Root Hub". But after doing that, they still did not appear under
Device Manager. Any ideas what else I can do?

Are the USB ports connected to a motherboard header, or are they add-in cards?

Do you have the USB ports enabled in the BIOS setup?

Thanks, we're now on the right track. No, USB was turned off in BIOS
so turned them on. After another reboot, got message "Found new
Hardware - USB 2.0 FD". My jump drive is USB 2.0 but assume that
doesn't matter. Then the Found new Hardware wizard showed up and I
tried installing the same USB items found in Device Manager as on my
newer Dell but it didn't like anything I selected. Nevertheless,
Device manager now shows 3 items under "USB Hub": Generic USB Hub
USB Root Hub and Intel 82371 SB PCI+USB Universal Host Controller.

However, the jump drive is still not appearing in Windows Explorer. I
assume these 2 USB ports are part of the motherboard as didn't add on
anything. They are located directly beneath the mouse and keyboard
ports.

Next idea? (so far, so good). Kay

OK, now you've added new info that was not in your original post....that you are
connecting a USB flash or "jump" drive. They need a Win98SE driver installed to be
detected.
Did your drive come with a 98SE driver on diskette, or did you find and download one
from their website?
What is the brand and model of the jump drive?

"Found new Hardware - USB 2.0 FD" sounds like you have a USB-powered Floppy Drive
attached to the computer...do you?

You indicate that you had manually added a "USB Composite Device" and a "USB Root
Hub" via Add New Hardware, but I assume you forced the installation since they were
not being detected by Windows. Now Windows has detected the correct devices since
your manually added devices were not correct. So, now you need to remove ALL of
them from Device Manager and let Windows re-detect just the correct ones. Be sure
the USB device (flash/jump drive) is NOT connected to the computer's USB port.

The best way to do this is from Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Once in Safe Mode, open Device Manager and remove all the items listed that you
added and all the items that Windows detected after you enabled USB in the BIOS.
IOW, remove all the USB entries altogether. Also, if there is an "Other" category
in Device Manager in Safe Mode, remove everything in that category.
Click OK, then restart the computer in normal mode (Start> Shutdown> Restart), and
let Windows detect the USB hubs and so forth with no interference from you.

At that point, you can install the Win98SE driver for the flash drive if you have
it. If you don't, you need to go to their support pages and download/install their
98SE driver for that model device.
If they don't provide a driver for Win98SE, let me know and I will direct you to a
download for a "generic" driver.

SUCCESS! No, no USB-powered floppy drive. The PNY 2.0 USB drivers I
downloaded just weren't working. So decided to try my old 128MB Lexar
1.1 jump drive (as that's really all I need) and found a driver and it
installed like a whiz. Maybe it just didn't like 2.0 when the ports
are only 1.1. Who knows, but without your help, couldn't have done it
so thanks again. Kay

USB 2.0 devices like your PNY flash drive are *supposed* to be backward-compatible
with USB 1.1 ports. The drivers were probably just not working on your system for
some reason. One of my flash drives is a Memorex and I could never get the
downloaded 98SE drivers to install correctly either at work or at home, despite the
fact that others reported not having a problem with them on their systems. I
installed a generic USB driver after uninstalling all my other flash drive drivers,
and now all the flash drives I use are recognised right away, using that one driver.

Native USB Mass Storage Driver for Win98SE:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

On your older system you would do best with the 2.x version of the driver (the
installation of which is described in the middle of the page), the newest in English
being version 2.4:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/drivers/nusb24e.exe

Something to consider if you ever need to use that PNY flash drive with this older
system.

Glad you got the ports working!

little "Unplug or eject hardware" icon in the system tray.
Unfortunately I can't remember which one I used :(

I've just tried the Maximus Decim on one of my m/c's and I don't get
the icon.

Anybody know which driver does?

Best regards

I use the 2.x version of the Maximus Decim driver on machines at work which just
have USB 1.1 ports, and also here on a machine with USB 2.0 ports, and they all show
the icon in the tray. If you have the Maximus Decim driver installed along with
other drivers on the same machine (other generics or other manufacturer drivers) you
may not see the icon because you may be using the other driver. Uninstall all other
USB devices' drivers if you plan on using the Maximus Decim driver.

Yes, there is the newer 3.x version driver, but for the old system being discussed,
I think the 2.x driver is the better choice. YMMV. :)

I was referring to uninstalling any *drivers* you had installed for the USB devices,
from the device makers. Such as, if you had installed a driver for a particular
flash drive from the flash drive manufacturer, uninstall that driver via Add/Remove
Programs. Likewise, only have one "generic" driver installed on a system.

If you still have problems, try posting on the forum MEB linked:

Here's what is apparently suggested:

Disconnect the USB flash drives, etc.

In normal mode:
1. Go to Device Manager and delete the USB using devices/flash drives/etc.
[see the CAUTION and 2. below],

2. *Then OR if you want to see if that is necessary or not, FIRST* delete
the USB subs and hubs. Do NOT reboot yet.
[The MD driver has an uninstall so if you try this first, just make sure
your flash drive, etc. is NOT connected, uninstall the MD driver, Reboot,
let Windows install the original USB drivers, save the registry, reboot,
try the other way.]

3. Install the Maximus Decim driver.

4. ONLY then reboot to Normal Mode. Check to see if it installed in Device
Manager, and via a %windir% Search for the files, and/or, via a registry
Search, and/or, using MSInfo.
A couple files to search for [3.1 version used as example]:
usbhub20.sys - Version 5.00.2195.6891 - Product - Microsoft(R) Windows (R)
2000 Operating System
USBNTMAP.SYS - 4.90.3000 - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Millennium Operating
System
usbstor.sys - 4.90.3000.1 - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Millennium Operating
System
usbport.sys - 4.90.3000.1 - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Millennium Operating
System
usbehci.sys - 5.00.2195.6882 - Microsoft(R) Windows (R) 2000 Operating
System

5. REBOOT

6. Check your devices/drives/cameras/whatever...
Then, ONLY IF NECESSARY, install any *software* for individual devices....

CAUTION: Some have suggested that printer software, scanner software and
the like CAN be left installed. Others, the opposite. It appears to depend
upon the software, perhaps looking for its *own* port controls.

One more thing:

When you install the MD driver, make sure you are NOT connected to the
Internet, and if using USB network adapters, you recheck them for IP and
other BEFORE attempting to connect to the Internet... krnl386.exe [actually
the installed files running under the kernel] will/may be looking for
DHCP/DNS/IP. Might want to lock down {local only or completely depending
upon your needs} the exe BEFORE connecting to the Internet if it isn't
already.
Likely a good idea to run through all of the network settings and firewall
*just in case*.
