Wireless internet connection on a desktop running xp

I am trying to set up a wireless connection on a desktop running Windows HP for a friend. I have plugged in a wireless adapter and it says I am connected. Click on IE and it says it can't find the server. I can't seem to work out how to get the computer to use the wireless connection. Any advice gratefully received.
