USB driver?

R

Robert Baer

I have an old system, a VIA P4PB400-FL motherboard, and have the CD
that came with it.
But that CD only has audio drivers, no USB drivers.
I do not know how that problem was initially solved ages ago.
I am trying to re-install from scratch (new, larger HD), and all
works except in the device manager, i get a ? with USB controller device
associated with this wonderful icon.
Trying properties, install driver, i get text it is looking for
USBECHI.SYS from disk "Windows9X USB 2.0(ECHI) Driver Disk for VIA".
The Win98 CD, the VIA CD, and other 3rd party CDs all fail to satisfy
this.
Help???

The usbechi, sys file is in the Win98&ME folder in this d/l.

Are you Quite Sure the driver disc that came with the motherboard only has audio
drivers on it? That sounds wrong. The disc should have VIA 4-in-1 drivers, USB 2.0
drivers for Win98SE, audio drivers, as well as drivers for any other integrated
components such as video or LAN.

What type of GUI appears when you insert and autorun the disc?

Have you browsed the disc in Windows Explorer for folders labeled for Win98SE or for
USB 2.0?

Which one didn't work from the linked page I provided, ver.513A, ver.4.43 or ver.
4.35?
Which one is supposedly for Win2K? All drivers offered on that page include 98/SE
drivers.
Do you know anyone with higher bandwidth that will help out in downloading the driver
package?

Before I search around for anything else that you have already tried yet fail to
mention:
Have you checked the BIOS to make sure the USB is properly set/enabled?
Have you checked for a BIOS update that may have USB 2.0 included?

Oh, yes the disk has "4-in-one" drivers that seem to be only for
Linux and therefore (i would think) useless for WinDoze.
There seems to be *no* findable USB drivers on that disk.
There is only the audio driver, which works.
LAN driver(s), yes but i do not want that, ever on my system.
"Autorun" or any other ".INF" file does not work and will never work
and it does nt matter what OS one tries.
The best i can do is go thru the device manager and go thru the
"install driver" wizard and search around in futile attempts to find a
driver that will load.
I do have a dinky CD that is a 3rd party driver set that does have a
USB driver (directory ..\VIA\VT6202\...) that is accepted, but the
wizard, after reading the file(s) gives an error message.
That disk is labelled "Drivers & Utility" Version 1.0 that came with
an external HD/CD adaptot that runs off USB.

However, for the Nth time (N>>12) i will try again.
****
BTW, that "reference" on VIA Arena is for a *filter* and not a driver
(at least according to the documentation as i read it).
And who knows what the term "filter" really means?

1) Device manager shows all other USB items to be OK.
2) My USB scanner works OK.
3) My camera communicates perfectly via USB.
Naturally, it is impossible to discover if any of that is 1.1 or 2.0,
and the BIOS is the latest (board is rev C which runs the HDs almost
twice as fast as an older rev B).
The reference included in your message makes a lot of fuss that " a
VIA USB2 driver package cannot be distributed online" making one
conclude that whatever is offered is *not* a USB driver.
Then more fuss is made concerning use of "Windows XP SP1 (Service
Pack 1), Windows 2000 SP4..." which is real BS relative to Win98SE.
Well, i *do* have Win2K SP4 straight from M$ and it is of zero help.

BTW, this is the *FIRST* time i have seen a VERY PESKY POPUP that
appears to be a "Vibrant Ad" from www.microsoft.com/peopleready that
totally infuriates me (it cannot be removed).
Where is that sh*t from and how can i send it back to haunt the
source witha vengance?
Someone else might want to send a particular package of fertilizer
and fuel oil...

Robert, the file name is [USBEHCI.sys], *HC* not *ch* . Try
searching your Motherboards SupportCD to see if you find any file
containing the string 'EHCI'. If there are USB 2.x drivers on
your MB supportCD and they are older then summer 2002, the
filename might be [OUSBEHCI.sys] but as USB 2.x was rather new
then, i think downloading newer drivers is probably a good idea
anyway.

Oops, the english-only download has bloated to 10285183 Byte (ca
10 MB), still if you have one of the USB 2.x controller-chip
listed (VT6202, VT6212, VT6214 (or VT8235)), downloading it over
phoneline to hopefully get your USB 2.x working ... just do it.

VIA's USB 2.0 Host Controller Driver Package 2.70p1(2005-10-03)
Direct Download link:
<http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_USB2_V270p1-L.zip>

From the ReadMe:
VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller driver package included two different
drivers:
1) VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller Driver for WinME and Win98/SE.
2) USB filter drivers for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

So i am a bit dyslexic on my typing I see that there was no
confusion due to that error.

I looked very carefully on the "support" CD.
The last page of the manual mentioned the software that is (supposed
to be) on the CD, and it mentions a USB 2.0 driver.
However, it simply does not exist anywhere on the CD.
The "4in1" drivers (as documented) are for IDE, AGP, IRQ and Power
Management *period*.
The "support" CD has *no* autorun or Setup at the root.
So for this purpose, it is totally useless.

What i did, was clean that small 3rd party CD, used Windows Explorer
to snoop around and found in the \VIA\VT6202\.. directory a SETUP
program, and ran that.
Worked!
I suspect that using the Setup program there was absolutely required
cleaning may have helped.
I have seen this junk before loading a driver via Device Manager
coming up snake-eyes VS using Setup and having success.
I had no idea that the 3rd party CD had Setup programs.

Oh, yes, all other USB support came via the courtesy of that scanner
software.

VIA 4-in-1 drivers are for Windows, not Linux. Where are you seeing anything about
them being for Linux?

If you look at a random selection of my posts, you'll see that
you're not the only one. No problem, i just wanted to point it
out for you if you tried to search for that name on your disks,
or online.

Yes, the '4in1' driver package is for different controllers, not
for USB 2.x.

Yes, i saw you describe having that in another post, but that
using the drivers there gave an error. Good to here you got them
to install OK.

Folders are named thus: "4in1_v_443" then "4in1" then "linux".
And, the manual-stated drivers in 4in1 do *not* support USB.
So, i ASS-u-ME-d that the Linux folder might support USB.
Looked there and found only IDE support (one-in-one and not four-in-one).
