Hi all,

Totally off topic, but maybe one of you can help.

Have been talking to someone via gmail and 'hello', and things have gotton strange.
Anyhow,,,, could any of you tell me if a person can ping your isp account number just to see if
you are online?
I am on dialup, as you know, is there anyway my computer can send a message back saying
that I am offline even if I am online?

If you connect to the internet using a fixed IP address then pinging that
address will show whether the user is connected to the net or not.
However since you appear from your message headers to be connecting via
Optusnet dial-up I suspect that it is unlikely you are always connecting
using the same IP address. For example your post was made by you when
connected as follows: wayax6-144.dialup.optusnet.com.au 211.29.44.144.
When you next connect see if you are again allocated the IP address
211.29.44.144. If not then pinging that address and finding it in use
means nothing as it would simply mean that another optusnet user was
connected and had been allocated that address for the duration of their
connection.

If you were to connect via ADSL or cable and your line was always
connected via say a router, or if you had a fixed IP address then pinging
that IP address would confirm or not whether your network was connected
but would tell the person pinging nothing else as you could well be out
shopping or working whilst leaving your PC connected.

Finally, for those using routers or firewalls it is fairly simple to
configure them to ignore, that is not respond, to pings.

Easy for you to say, grin. I have to put that D-Link wireless router
back on this computer if Elayne brings her laptop at Xmas. Apparently
the tech help is supposed to be better there now, but If I get stuck,
can you help? I swear this was written so that only MEN understand
it.!!

Oh, and I know next to nothing about D-Link routers although the girls
used to use one before it hit the rubbish bin - in other words passed on
to one of their friends.

Thanks Mikey......I will reread the booklet and I do have a patch of
some sort to put on that has been sitting on my desktop for a year. (G)

What are you using?? Linksys?? Willy did tell me he preferred the tech
help on that one.

Cold and rainy here today and looks like we will get more of the same
for a week. Almost like London, eh? Portugal is really warm, I
see....Zee is the lucky one.

Both the girls and myself are using SpeedTouch router/modems as these have
good compatibility with the ADSL2+ DSLAMs used by our respective ISPs
(myself Bulldog/Cable & Wireless, the girls BeThere). I used to use a
Netgear router/modem when I was on ADSL but this wasn't ADSL2+ capable so
had to buy a new router/modem.

But we're 8 degrees further north than yourself! <g> You're latitude is
more that of north west Spain than that of London which is around 650
miles further north than B. Of course, we do have the Gulf Stream to help
us.

I had to do a bit of re-booting with my router last night as I lost contact
with it <g> but usually don't have much trouble with it. I have an Add-On
with 3 machines connected to it on ADSL.
