ie 8 in XP

Greetings, have a Levono laptop use in case of others having issues but when trying to load ie8 with a local news site it's coming back with a connection issues message. If I go to MSN it's fine? Appreciate some help please as 82 years young but can't figure out what to do. Spent 2 days on it!!!
