We just had a Lenovo Motherboard replaced in an enterprise RD650 series server and immediately following the replacement the previously activated license key would not re-activate. Attempts to use the Microsoft Activation tools, smart-phone and voice activated both fail to re-activate this license.
We have an open case with Lenovo, and they say the reason is due to the Microsoft OEM branded version of server 2016 is bound to the BIOS activated.
I'm working with lenovo tier 2 support, and they are searching for answers.
We support a number of clients with Lenovo Hardware and Lenovo branded operating systems known as "reseller option kits." and this problem scares the heck out of me. I found several Lenovo tech notes about this problem.
The mother board was replaced.
The original UUID was re-entered into the system by the service tech..
The original 4 port NIC was reinstalled.
The original processors were re-installed.
The original Ram was re-installed.
This is a horrible situation that Both Microsoft and Lenovo has put us and our client in.
It's all about the money!
