How to add network printer on WinXP

My HP LJ M276nw printer/scanner is connected directly to my wifi router via a LAN cable.

But when I use Add Printer on my WinXP desktop, the wizard does not see the LJ on the network.

How can I add the LJ as a network printer to my WinXP desktop?

I tried the following steps on the WinXP desktop.

1. Click Printers and Faxes > Add Printer > Next

2. Select Network Printer > Next

3. Select Browse For Printer > Next

It finds only:

Microsoft Windows Network

Workgroup

When I try selecting either, then click Next, I get the error "need to specify network printer name", presumably because the Printer field is still blank.

I added the network LJ printer to my Win7 desktop, which connects to my local network via wifi. It is able to print and access the scanner.

So the LJ is operational on the network.

The WinXP desktop is also connected directly to my wifi router via a LAN cable. And it can access the internet.

So the WinXP desktop is operational on the network.

The LJ was connected directly to my WinXP desktop via a USB cable. It was able to print and access the scanner.

So the WinXP LJ M276nw driver is operational.

In the Printers and Faxes control panel, there is already a device file for the non-network printer with the name "HP LaserJet 200 color MFP M276 PCL 6".

Is that part of the problem?

I deselected it as the default printer and renamed it, to no avail.

I am loathe to try to update or reinstall the WinXP LJ M276nw driver. Even if it is available from support.hp.com (I didn't look), I would not trust its integrity, so long after the end of WinXP support. And I certainly would not trust a driver download from a third-party.

Also, I do not believe that is related to the problem. That is, I do not believe I have gotten far enough in the process for any issue with the WinXP LJ driver to be a problem, even if there is a problem.
