Download the Visual Basic 6 SP6 Runtime installer from here, and save it on your
desktop or another easy-to-find folder:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192461
Direct download link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/install/6/win98me/en-us/vbrun60.exe

Do not run the installer yet.

Restart in Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

In Safe Mode, open My Computer or Windows Explorer, and navigate to the
C:\Windows\System folder.

Find the file "oleaut32.dll" and select (highlight) it by clicking on it once, then
press the F2 key to rename it, type the new name "oleaut32.dll.old" (without the
quotes).
Press Enter to complete the rename.

Now run the "vbrun60.exe" file you downloaded earlier, then restart the computer in
normal mode.

personally, i believe there is an easier way, but you already have enough info to get the job done.

my reason for post is just so you know that the file you are having problems with is due to
something you downloaded recently and it brought with it its own version of 'that' file which is
actually designed for xp.

if you have no luck with the other methods, post back.

Try replacing the file using this method:

Run sfc.exe and select the "extract one file..." option. Type in the
complete name of the missing file you want to restore or use the browse
button for a file replacement. Click start and in the resulting window,
browse to the location of the folder containing the W98 .cab files (either
the hard drive or CDRom drive). If the information in the "save in" box is
wrong, use the browse button to show where the file is to be restored to.
Click OK and if appropriate, on the resulting screen, show the location
where the file being replaced is to be backed up to. Click OK or skip as
appropriate. Restart your computer and the file replacement will occur
during the boot process.

If you are going to use sfc.exe for other than the extract option, I highly
recommend that you first read the article here:
