Upgrade from XP to Win 7 or 8

Dear Sir/Madam, when I tried to use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine if I can upgrade my stand alone desktop computer (with no internet capability) from XP to Windows 7, I recieved the following error message: "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor was unable to reach the Microsoft server for compatibility infomation. Check your internet connection and try again later."

How can I make the determination without internet connection?

I will have the same problem if I want to upgrade to Windows 8. JC
