Save password in DUN

[ms]

It's been years since I've done this, forgot past data.

I created a DUN, can dial up, but the save password entry is greyed out, so
even after a sucessful connection, the next time I have to reenter data.

In the network setup screen, I had selected Windows logon as IIRC I always
did, but read in an old tip file that I need "Client for Microsoft
Networks" to save the password.

Advice?

I see an issue from before, windows seeks files, Have Disk, browse to CD,
it won't seek the subfolder on the OS CD.

If someone has advice on how to address that so browse will find the CD
files, I'd appreciate it.

Change the target path of this registry key's value and you should
have no more troubles finding the CD.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
"SourcePath"="C:\\Windows\\Options\\Cabs"

Your value should be:
E:\\Win98

if your CDROM drive were drive E:
double backslash only found in .reg files, using regedit you'll only
see standard single backslash.

W98SE working right is a pleasure, W2K is tolerable, XP is not.

Don't. You password and username can be recovered with some spyware. If
you don't save the password, it can't be recovered.

I can dial up, this is the first winmodem I ever used, and I never hear
the usual modem tones, but the normal icon appears in the System Tray, it
shows the usual data.

But when I run my browser, at every one of my usual bookmarked sites, get
"Server Not Found". That's a standard error I can look into, but need to
fix this first.

I then went into Control Panel/Internet Connections, Properties, the DUN
icon, in domain it shows mail.copper.ne :it is supposed to be net. I
reentered the correct mail.copper.net, closed, dialed up again, browsed
again, same message.

Went back to look at properties, again it reads: mail.copper.ne , even
after I corrected it again.

No wonder it can't find the server, the domain is wrong and can't be
corrected.

Advice?

it should be:
"SourcePath"="D:\\win98"

IF you installed windows from your CD drive that has a letter of D:
all the above does is to let windows know that the installation CAB
files are in the win98 folder of the CD so that you don't have to
constantly point windows to them manually when they are needed. There
are other registry entries that get cleared when you clear certain
histories that may temporarily interfere with the above process, but
that registry key and value is the only one that is permanent.

Ron's site too, but more to the point I was hinting that for
posterities sake, a good USENET poster is not supposed to just come
back and say - "it's fixed". You are supposed to come back and show
us the page you used to fix the greyed out "save password" box and I
do mean precisely the exact page and place on the page. A link to a
massive collection such as Cquirke's is NOT a whole lot of help, I get
lost in broom closet you understand. Not a biggy, it's not for me...

When I said "fixed", it was not easy to describe how it got fixed. It was
not reference to some new data. I have some data saved that says you
*must* have Client for MS Networks" selected to save password. I have
other data that says you *must* have MS Family Logon selected, IIRC, I
always used Windows logon. In this case I tried both of the above, each
required files from the OS CD, still don't have that working. So I went
back to Windows logon, the first time it did not work, this time it
worked to save password. And other data I have has 10 different causes
for not saving the password. Everyone's machine reacts differently, so
YMMV, as they say. So what happens to work for me on this machine may not
help someone else, but you're right, I should have mentioned the above.

The reply I posted to Ron is something new to me, hope to get an answer,
as can't get on the internet.

not there add it up there and one should be able to "Save"

I can't say for other machines, but in this install of W98SE,
"SourcePath" did not exist in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup, so I
used New String Value to create it. Maybe a mistake, first time I've done
that. I rebooted.

Went to Network, TCP/IP Properties, it scanned the drives, now it saw D,
I entered Win98, it read the CD. It finished, there was no message screen
after that. AFAIK, it finally got the dialup files it needed from the CD.

Went into Internet Options, Properties, again entered the domain name, it
again screwed up, I will open a new thread on this.

OK ms, you are quite persistant! I am finally up to speed and may be
able to provide some useful info after all, thanks for getting back
with enough info to jump start my thought process. The greyed out
"save password" box is a problem that plagued early Windows and I was
misfiring on that data for a while, perhaps the solution today would
have worked back then too. Client for MS Networks, MS Family Logon,
and Windows logon are available via the Network applet in the Control
Panel and they all have to do with Network setup and so does the
greyed out "save password" box. The solution is to remove everything
in that Network applet and reinstall only and exactly only what you
want and need as far as your Network is concerned. In order to do
this you will need to access Windows Installation CD so it's very
handy that you just got that fixed!

Remove the Dial-Up Adapter right up to the logon service, you want the
box in that applet completely blank. Then add back in a minimum to
suit your machine for example Windows Logon, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/
IP > Dial-Up Adapter is the minimum for me.

What you did in the registry was exactly the right thing to do as far
as the non-existing SoucePath key was concerned but you may have
entered the data wrong and that should be double checked. This link

I CAN say for all 98 machines, a proper and valid SourcePath key value
is one of the very FIRST registry entries ever made. Why it would be
missing from your machine makes me believe that you installed Windows
from the CD and not the hard drive which means you'll be doing it
again soon enough anyway. In other words you have a dodgy install of
Windows - danger will robinson, danger - do it right and reinstall
Windows from the hard drive today before you have invested even more
time in a shoddy installation.
