SP1 and hard/software compatibility

Is SP1 expected to add Vista compatibility to some hardware and software
that is currently not Vista compatible?

I doubt it. It isn't Microsoft's responsibility to get other people's stuff
working.

Hopefully no one is expecting that since is is the responsibility of
the hardware and software to make their products compatible with an
operating system.
Although it is possible more compatibility may be added, do not count
on it.

If you have incompatible hardware or software, you should ask the
respective manufacturers if they plan to support their customers needs
with Vista compatibility.

Paul, Oh mighty MVP Windows Shill/User -) I'm afraid I disagree (strongly)
-). Every possible attempt is made to insure backwards compatibility with
existing software. How many sales would MS make if their new operating
system was not compatible with anything? They wouldn't sell a copy. That
is a ridiculous proposition but I'm just trying to highlight the fact that
MS cooperates with software manufacturers early on in the development
process because more compatibility means more sales. However, a line must be
drawn somewhere since it would be counterproductive to spend a great deal of
time and money to insure compatibility with 20+ year old legacy apps. Even
so they usually build in a compatibility mode to accomplish the seemingly
impossible. I can't recall *any* OS that MS developed, going all the way
back to DOS V2, that didn't accommodate an extremely large percentage of
legacy apps. It's just good business. Some incompatibility problems are
simply code glitches which weren't intentional but just fell through the
cracks. I anticipate that some of those things will be fixed in SP1 and will
result in increased compatibility. Manufacturers will attempt to patch their
products incrementally to insure compatibility and they will do so with the
full cooperation of MS. Also good business. That's my story and I'm
stickin' to it

I have no knowledge of what will be in SP1, but I *highly* doubt that.
Hardware compatability comes with drivers, and writing drivers is the
responibility of the hardware manufacturers. Software compatibility doesn't
rest on drivers, but it too is the responsibility of the software
manufacturers.

And the following one solves one bug with Adobe Encore DVD 2.0

This issue occurs because Windows Vista does not recognize
the installer for the Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 Library folder as a valid installer.

The installer for the Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 Library folder
differs from the installer for the Adobe Encore DVD 2.0
program files. The installer for the Adobe Encore DVD 2.0
Library folder has its own unique product code and unique
..msi file. Therefore, even though you successfully install the
Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 program files, the Library folder may
not be available

Neither of these issues are at all likely to be addressed by any
Vista service pack, because these aren't even remotely Windows issues.
Contact the makers of the various hardware devices to obtain updated,
Vista-specific device drivers and any accompanying software. Contact
the makers of each specific application to obtain a patch or update to
make the application Vista-compatible.

Interesting reading. One product of mine "Adobe Photoshop Elements Version
4.0" is on that list. It did not work before so I'll have to re-install and
see if it runs Ok now. It's a positive sign to see that many apps listed.
As far as the folks who claim that Vista compatibility is the total
responsibility of the software/hardware venders I say fine. But I don't
think those people reflect Microsoft's thinking. At work we completely avoid
Vista. A couple of computers shipped with Vista and we bit the bullet and
paid to load XP on them. Now Dell is shipping with XP again and that's a
good thing for companies like mine. So there are choices. And people who
choose drive the marketplace.
I'm a home dual booter by the way.

After January new XP licences will not be available. Dell will have to use
Vista then!
