I have a client who has a network share with 1.4 TB of images (800K+ files). The image file names are warranty code numbers. For each warranty there are multiple photos. So photos might be named "1128543 001.jpg" "1128543 002.jpg" "1128543 003.jpg" When they do a search of the share on their new Windows 10 PCs, the search is quick, but the thumbnails take a "long" time to display, compared to their recently retired Windows 7 machines. For example, if a search finds 20 images, the thumbnails might take 20 seconds to display. (A placeholder image icon shows in the search window until the actual thumbnail shows.)
If we do the same search on one of the remaining Windows 7 boxes, the thumbnails display very quickly. Probably 4-5 thumbnails display per second.
From what I understand, if you do a search in a particular folder, you can benefit from the thumbs.db image cache, but if you're searching across a network share, you don't. Does anyone know why the phenomenon we're seeing is different on Windows 10 versus 7? The client isn't very happy with their investment in Windows 10.
Thanks in advance,
Ron
