As Bear said...
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
....still works, although, for me: "There are no critical updates
available at this time." I've got them all!

As Terhune discovered, you may need at least IE v.5.5, though, before it
will work...

.........Quote.............
After reinstalling Win98, you must upgrade to IE6 SP1 before you can use
Windows Update, yes otherwise, you should be able to access any other
web-page, including Microsoft's.

Download IE6 SP1 (full 9 KB - 77.5 MB)

Download Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (IE6 SP1) setup:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CB-5E5D-48F5-B02B-20B602228DE6&displaylang=en

Disable your anti-virus, start the downloaded setup program, and install, then
reboot when prompted.

After that, go to Windows Update, scan your system and start installing the Critical
Updates. Don't try to take them all in one shot....spread them out.

So, while I wasn't looking, they apparently deleted all 9x Updates from the

Hey, Gary I'm still directing people that you have CDROMs available for a
minimal cost containing 9X [and other] updates , is this still true?

One of those CDs was the SecCD 2004, and another was likely the previously
offered updates, is this correct?

So what was the other CD [you mentioned three before didn't you]?

Did you create some form of autoupdate installer for those updates,
included on the updates CD?

Would you be willing to offer your site as a repository for other
languages/updates or are you [or others] aware of sites which already offer
those non-English versions?

Yes. I ask $3, cash or check. When I get the money, I send the CDs. I don't
want to put my mailing address here, so I ask people to email
"updates_at_grystmill.com".

> One of those CDs was the SecCD 2004, and another was likely the previously

The one is a copy of the SecUp CD 2004, the other contains all updates
subsequent to that CD's release. IOW, it covers everything you'd do to a
fresh install to bring it up to date.

> So what was the other CD [you mentioned three before didn't you]?

None other. 2 CDs only. I *did* produce a Time Zones updater that I host on
my website. I don't distribute that via CD.

> Did you create some form of autoupdate installer for those updates,
> included on the updates CD?

No. The SecUp 2004 CD is self-contained and auto-installed, but the
subsequent Updates are simply organized by OS (98, 98SE or ME), type of
Update, and order of installation, with detailed Readmes included to suggest
procedures.

> Would you be willing to offer your site as a repository for other
> languages/updates or are you [or others] aware of sites which already
> offer
> those non-English versions?

No, I will not host any stored Updates. I distribute them via CD now so that
the costs are covered. I don't feel like paying for online storage and
potentially high transfer costs. I think that in the case of Updates for
other languages, it's a task for each of the communities that serve
non-English users. I hope they prepared like I did. I'm sure they're out
there somewhere, but it was a lot easier to get them via WU. By using WU to
figure out which Updates to install and in what order, I avoided
redundancies and needless installations of subsequently superceded patches.
Of course, it also excludes patches, etc., that weren't included at WU a
year ago. Most of those were either superceded or they pertain to specific
cases or scenarios and should only be installed if conditions demand (e.g.,
HotFixes.)

If someone were to express a desire to host the Updates on a website, I'd be
willing to talk. Best method would be a pair of ISOs, but if someone were to
have unlimited space, it could get a lot more customizable according to
users' needs, with copies of various Updates organized in various manners,
the SecUp CD torn apart, etc. But providing the stuff I have is about as far
as I want to go on any such project. Don't feel like yanking the MS chain
*that* hard.

You can only access the old Windows Update Catalog from Windows 98 or
ME.

2000, XP, and 2003 use the new Microsoft Update Catalog.

WindowsUpdate will still feed an unpatched win-98 system with updates.

Okay, chalk that to numerous other issues in mind, and ,, well you know ...

So it would still be useful for parties presently running 9X to save their
windows Update.log and iuhist.xml so they could potentially determine the
order and what they might need, by comparing what was installed by the SecCD
{or perhaps after mid 2004}.. most of those will be for IE 6 and OE anyway
....

http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/ref/gen/windows/manual_update_98.htm -
Manually updating a new installation of Windows 98SE
though now, apparently, they will be searching Microsoft (or the Internet)
for any files they don't have saved locally or which aren't on the second
subsequent updates CD.

Okay, thanks Gary, I certainly understand. Perhaps there will be other

Huh... I thought I'd mentioned it on my site, but I guess I forgot that
detail. I'll fix that. But it's best to send folks to updates@grystmill.com.
I can remind them of the cost and tell them where to send the cash. As for
the rest... I'm retired, I guess. With regard to Updates, anyway, I've
pretty much done all I'm going to do. (So long as I can remember who I am,
I'll try to keep the Time Zones Updater up to date -- except for Israel.)

| You can only access the old Windows Update Catalog from Windows 98 or
| ME.

I confirm that on this Win98SE the Catalog...
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

....STILL offers...!...

78 Critical Updates & Service Packs
1 Additional Windows Downloads
1 Internet & Multimedia Updates
75 Multi-language Features
15 Recommended Updates
1 Windows Tools
0 Advanced Security Updates

| 2000, XP, and 2003 use the new Microsoft Update Catalog.
|
| WindowsUpdate will still feed an unpatched win-98 system with updates.

Well that's good news. I still wonder what the case is with other languages,
but I'm just not bored enough, yet, to install foreign-language versions to
see what's available. Would be kinda fun, though, and I've got them all from
MSDN.

Yep, good news. And I took at least all the criticals (I think/hope)
into...

E:\WU>dir /a /s
Directory of E:\WU
....snip
Total files listed:
209 file(s) 195,804,619 bytes
344 dir(s) 7,295.86 MB free

Probably I'll never actually need them, though, but will rely on my full
system backup in any emergency. (Still, some day, I really should try a
fresh install, or as close as I can get to one on this Compaq.)

But I don't know what the catalog offers for foreign languages.
Hopefully, that's the same as it always was.

It's good to see your poodles found something to grab onto absent your
ten toes to get you out of that eleventh earthquake, Terhune!
