Trying to restart old laptop; windows boot error

Hi - I've been trying to transfer old mini DV tapes to my laptop. The only laptop I have that had the required port (ieee1394/ilink firewire) is an old Toshiba Satellite from the early 00s running Windows 7 (current laptop doesn't have a card slot to add one). However it did not have photos/movie maker live on it, and looking around I was advised that no windows 7 updates were available any more but was directed to a still active link from microsoft to update to windows 10. I downloaded windows 10, but after it loaded it wouldn't recognise any internet/wifi drivers. So I did a system recover back to windows 7, and now it won't launch windows at all; it first goes to a 'launch windows/launch repair' option, the repair takes it to an error screen saying it cannot diagnose the problem, and then the laptop shuts off. I have tried a system recovery but it now doesn't find any restore points. It won;t start safe mode. Has anyone got any ideas? The only alternative is to either go on ebay and try my luck finding another outdated laptop with a firewire port. Thanks
