Windows XP activation question

I have been using a Windows XP virtual machine for ages since my scanner (yeah, I need to get another one, but I like it) works only on XP.


What puzzles me is that when I phone Microsoft telephone support, I am provided a confirmation ID for the corresponding installation ID and told to hang on to the installation ID for future use. But the installation ID changes the next time I have to reinstall and as the confirmation ID, naturally, does not match the next time around, it fails.


What am I missing here?
