In the short 10 minutes, I exited AVG antivirus
to install a thumb drive *.exe, my cursor
would pass over an icon, and the icon would disappear.

I assumed I had picked up a virus, I rebooted
and did a partial 40 minutes AVG scan
It reported no viruses found ,yet it shows this
http://cjoint.com/data/lDoZp5P86L.htm

Is this a virus report or what?
what is meant by "change"
thanks very much.

Please tell us why you closed your anti-virus application before installing
an application from/to use a flash drive?

......because I told him to. -)

Rod had a USB flash stick driver installation for Win98, and I told him to close all
open apps and disable his anti-virus while he installed the driver package.

Are you referring to your Desktop icons?
Does it still happen after you reboot the computer?

I'm not positive and can't check right now, but I *believe* the "generic" USB driver
you got (from a link by Alan Edwards, you stated IIRC) may have installed an updated
version of user.exe, which would be what AVG is showing you in that screenshot.

The nusb31.exe driver set contains ...

user.exe 19/04/01 8:33 AM 549,792 bytes
user32.dll 19/04/01 8:36 AM 55,296 bytes

[Hope you told him to physically disconnect from the internet, too.]

Thanks Frank, Glen, PA Bear,
that resolved the query.
No Glen did not tell me to disconnect from the internet,
but I take the full blame, it should have been common sense
I decided to live on the edge,
thinking 10 minutes there would be no harm.
I've patched my thought process in that regard.

Sorry I was tardy in reply, it was nighty night in my
part of the blue ball.

It's a risk, but one I have taken here many times with no ill effects. I have
disabled my AV countless times during installations, and have never once unplugged
my router or modem during that period. In fact I've browsed web sites with the AV
disabled a number of times.

Still, my bad for not laying that out in my step-by-step.

Did the disappearing icon issue resolve itself with a reboot, or no?

I cannot recall receiving a virus in 8 years with 98se,
excepting of course, on occaisions slipping in a Thai CDRom

Yes it did, Glen.

For various reasons I have often turned off my Avast! AV or my ZA firewall,
but I never turn them both off at the same time.
If I want to make changes that are self-contained within my computer and
don't need to be connected to the internet, I merely switch off my cable
modem. Never had a virus, or a significant spyware problem.

BTW, I will use Windows 98se until they pry it from my cold dead hands --
apologies to the NRA gun nuts.
