Skype vs. Net2Phone

The download page for Skype says that it works on win2000 and XP, it
might even say you must have one of those, but does that mean for sure
that a program written for 2000/xp won't run on win98SE or WinME?

Also Google Earth says that and so I didn't install it, but maybe I
should have tried, if there is some chance it would run.

Could it do any damage to install one of these where it wasn't
designeed to go?


If I can't do this, does anyone know if Net2Phone (which does work on
winme and 98SE) can be used to call Skype commputers?

Skype doesn't call "computers", it calls any phone on the world
directly. I believe Net2Phone, as the name implies, does the
same.

Net2Phone is 8 or more years old and it may or may not work at
all - I have it but for some reason I never tried it. I really
should - I still run 95B on my internet computer and can't use
Skype either.

You can't harm a computer by installing an incompatible program
- it will either say your system is not compatible or it will
just hang or do nothing. In the worst case, reboot and clean up
whatever mess it may have made (new half-empty directories etc).

Still, it is WISE to put it mildly to have a complete backup of
a perfect C: drive setup done with an image program like Acronis
True Image or Ghost. No matter WHAT happens, 5 minutes later
you're back in business.

No: it means (a) the manufacturer claims it will work with
some OSs and not with others (b) it does not mean the
product is guaranteed not too run under Win98 it means
it will very probably not run under Win98. Once in a while
an app runs under an OS different from what the maker
claims on the box.

The likeliest source of damage is overwriting on your hard
drive a system file with the same name in the app's instal
procedure. Afterwards your other apps that call this file
may find it different and therefore perhaps may not work.

Voice phone calls are indifferent to the system that
creates and connects them. (Your WinME PC can be
connected to a Commodore 64 and the data does
not care how either made the connection.)

I run Skype on my Win98SE.
I don't use the Video features so I cannot attest to that, but the phone
part works great.

I thought it was Win2000 and up...

Anyway, I have 98SE Lite on my other computer but it doesn't
even have a modem let alone anything better. This machine is 95B
and will remain so until it is dead beyond resuscitation.

Franc, you are amazing. I knew about oldversion.com but this one
- OBVIOUS AS HECK as the name is - was unknown to me... Haven't
checked it out yet but I'm sure it's full of goodies!

That's exactly what I was worried about. When I've used SFC, I think
it was, system file checker, I sometimes see files whose date seems
older than it should be. That's a different problem, but it makes me
think I installed old software and it installed a dll or something
that was older than the one that was there. Or some other similar
problem.

For example, I'm getting a lot of errors with some module whose name I
don't remember, msg32 or something like that (that gives "Not
responding" in the cntl-alt-delete box, and I keep thinking that some
executable is too old or too new for the environment I have. WinME
laid over win98SE.

Good to know. Thanks. If I stay here much longer, maybe I should
encourage my friends back in the US to install either Skype or
Net2phone and then talk to me. This typing is taking a lot of time,
and I'm fairly fast.

is just the way they think and write and reality can be broader than
the way they express it, and I believe what you say above, but what is

But the Oldapp page has loads of versoins and it doesn't say how far
back one needs to go to run on win98SE or WINME (which seems almost
the same) . What version are you using?

(I know I could just install one after the other, but that doesn't
seem wise.)

All I can say is that I recently had someone call me from the
other side of the world and we talked for 2 hours. He told me it
cost him nothing because he was using Skype.

My phone rang, I answered, we talked. The connection was
excellent.
