Error Loading Kernel
You Must Reinstall Windows

Help!
Everytime I turn on the computer, it displays that message, then turns off.
I've tried starting it with the restore disk in the CD drive, but still
nothing! I've also tried restarting in Safe Mode, no good. There must be a
way to install from MS Dos or something...Please help me!

You can reinstall Windows 98 without booting up to Windows, you will need
either a Windows Start Up disk (floppy) and/or the Windows 98 Installation CD
with the Product Key. You will also need to be able to boot from either the
floppy or CD Drive. If you boot from the Windows Start Up disk, you will
need to select the option with CD Rom support. If you boot from the Windows
98 Installation CD, it will automatically start the Installation, however I
find it better to exit the installation, which will put you at the DOS
prompt: C:\ at this prompt or if you booted from the floppy you will see
A:\ type the following command: d:\win98\setup /ie /iv (where d: is the
letter for your CD ROM drive), this will speed up the installation because it
skips all the old Microsoft propaganda about how good Windows 98 is.

Be advised though that if you use a restore disk from the computer's
manufacturer, it will likely completely over-write the Operating System at
the minimum or will complete wipe the hard drive first before it installs
Windows 98 again and the above instructions likely won't apply. Although you
could still re-install Windows from a regular Windows 98 Second Edition CD,
if you have or can get one and a CD Key for it. The Computer Manufacturer's
Product Key will not work on a regular Microsoft produced CD.

If you had the fore-thought before this crash, to copy all the installation
files from the CD to your hard drive, you won't need to boot from either a
floppy or the CD, you can hold down the [Ctrl] key while the system is
booting, then select "Command Prompt Only" then using the MS DOS command "cd"
(change directory) to navigate to the directory where the files are stored I
copied my entire Windows 98SE Installation CD to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\W98SETUP
and the Windows setup program is in the WIN98 subdirectory.

I hope this helps.

I think you know what to do with the [at] and [dot]

Windows 98 isn't dead, it's just abandoned by it's creator!

Thanks for the help. I got the desktop back, but now I can't open any files.
I'm back to getting Kernel32.dll errors!
