On the Microsoft Update Catalog website, when I choose an update to download, the site often offers me an extra .exe file to download with a name beginning msipatchregfix. One website indicates it's a "Patch Registration Clean up Utility". To see an example, click on any of the download buttons for this update.

Could someone tell me what these msipatchregfix... files do, whether I should download and run them, too, and if so, how to run them—they seem to require a product code as an argument? Do they offer any additional benefit compared to when installing via Windows' Automatic Updates?
